Bellator 50 Results: Baker, Rogers, Shlemenko, and Vianna Advance to Middleweight Semis

Bellator season five continued tonight with the quarterfinals of the Bellator middleweight tournament live from the Seminole Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, where middleweights Bryan Baker, Brian Rogers, Alexander Shlemenko, and Vitor Vianna all advanced to the semifinals with victories over their respective opponents.

In the main event of the night, Bryan Baker overcame an early threat from Jared Hess to hand him the first stoppage loss of his career not due to injury. Hess looked great early and nearly secured a fight ending rear-naked choke, but Baker showed impressive heart by refusing to tap. The turning point of the fight came soon after when Hess attempted a sambo rolling knee bar and missed badly with Baker stacking Hess and battering him with strikes. Hess was unable to put Baker in any real danger the rest of the bout.

A bit of controversy marred an otherwise exciting fight between Brian Rogers and Victor O?Donnell. Rogers dropped O?Donnell and followed up with hammer fists on the ground until the referee stepped in to stop the fight. O?Donnell argued vehemently that he was not out and was still able to fight. While replays showed O?Donnell was still alert throughout the exchange, the awkard positioning of the referee coupled with the way O?Donnell?s arms were awkwardly positioned likely contributed to the early stoppage. After the fight, Rogers said he thought the fight might have ended early but berated the crowd for booing and said he would gladly take a future rematch.

On the local card (aired on Spike.com), Rad Martinez won his Bellator debut in impressive fashion with a dominant decision victory. Martinez rose to fame with his appearance on ESPN?s Outside the Lines show.

Jake Ellenberger Surprised at Quick Finish of Jake Shields at UFC Fight Night 25

NEW ORLEANS - In what was unquestionably the most emotional fight of Jake Shields' career, the former champion ran into a buzzsaw in Jake Ellenberger.

In the main event of UFC Fight Night 25 in New Orleans, Ellenberger handed Shields the quickest loss of his career with a 53-second TKO. The loss comes just three weeks after the death of Shields' father and manager, Jack Shields.

"It's unbelievable - Jake Shields is a world champion, so I can't explain how I feel right now," Ellenberger said. "Just keeping the pressure - that was the strategy coming in here. I came out with the W and it feels great."

Ellenberger (25-5, 5-1 UFC) landed a left and a right, then moved in on Shields, tying him up. He threw one right knee, then a second that landed on the button. Shields dropped to the canvas, and Ellenberger pounced and landed several shots from Shields' back before the fight was stopped.

Shields (26-6-1, 1-2 UFC) appeared to go limp when the knee landed, then continued to look finished when he wasn't covering up from Ellenberger's strikes. But the former Strikeforce middleweight champion said after the fight he didn't think it should have been stopped.

"I'm just frustrated," Shields told Joe Rogan. "I got hit with a good hit. I thought I could still fight, but it is what it is. I thought I could keep fighting, but the ref thought it was time to stop it. There's nothing I can do."

Ellenberger's win gives him five straight in the welterweight division. Champion Georges St-Pierre defends his title against Carlos Condit next month, and a fight between BJ Penn and Nick Diaz could determine the next contender after Condit. But Ellenberger's quick win over Shields will have his name in consideration.

Ellenberger, though, said he won't think about where he should fall in the division.

"It really doesn't matter where I think I'm at. It's up to the UFC, and whoever they tell me to fight, I'm going to fight," Ellenberger said.

Ellenberger also said he was surprised he won the fight as quickly as he did. It was the fastest fight in Shields' career, and obviously his fastest loss. It was only the second time in Shields' career that he has been stopped, and the first time since 2000.

"I definitely could have envisioned myself winning this fight - but not that quick," Ellenberger said. "It happened fast, but I trained hard for this fight and I knew I was ready. ... The ref's job is to stop the fight, so I'm going to go until he stops me."

In the co-main event, Court McGee returned for the first time in 11 months and beat Dongi Yang by unanimous decision. McGee, the Season 11 winner of "The Ultimate Fighter," was rocked in the third round, but held on to get the victory, winning by scores of 30-27, 29-28 and 30-28.

And Alan Belcher returned for the first time in 16 months following a pair of eye surgeries and stopped Jason MacDonald in the first round. The win came just about an hour away from Belcher's Biloxi, Miss., home.

"It felt great, man - the crowd definitely gave some energy," Belcher said. "Even up until tonight, I was uncertain what I wanted to do. I was nervous as hell going into this training camp. I missed the feeling, and I feel like I can definitely continue down the path I was on and go for a title shot. I've got a feeling the title shot's going to come faster than I want it now."

Also on the main card, featherweight Erik Koch won his fourth straight with a unanimous decision victory over Jonathan Brookins.

UFC president Dana White after the fight handed out $55,000 bonus awards to four fighters. Ellenberger took the Knockout of the Night, delivering the night's only KO or TKO. TJ Waldburger, one of four submission wins, won Submission of the Night. And Lance Benoist and Matt Riddle won Fight of the Night for their preliminary card slugfest, won by Benoist in his UFC debut by unanimous decision.

Urijah Faber is good at push-ups and eating pie

Urijah Faber recently lost his chance to win the UFC bantamweight belt. The nice people at Fuel TV gave him a chance to win a new title: The World Champion of Push-Ups and Pie Eating.

After pie-eating push-ups, his next challenge is former WEC bantamweight champ Brian Bowles, who Faber is expected to take on at UFC 139.

Edwards, Peralta and Waldburger early winners at UFN 25

Justin Edwards, Robert Peralta and T.J. Waldburger started off Ultimate Fight Night 25 with wins. Waldburger's submission was the most memorable of the early fights taking place in New Orleans on Saturday night.

Edwards ekes out decision

Jorge Lopez, a protege of Wanderlei Silva's started the fight with a big takedown, leaving him open for� Edwards to squeeze in for a guillotine. Edwards could not hold on, and the fight returned to stand-up.

Edwards had an easy time taking down Lopez, but couldn't always hold on to his position. Edwards took� Lopez's back near the end of the second and used that position to land several big hooks, but again, Lopez was able to reverse out of the position.

Lopez took over in the third round, taking Edwards down and smothering him with strikes. He also showed off great jiu-jitsu, but it was not enough. Edwards won by decision, 29-28 on all three cards.

Peralta wins with leg kicks

Robert Peralta, making his UFC debut, won the first round with a takedown and several punishing leg kicks, the same move that Edson Barboza used to beat Mike Lullo in his last fight. Peralta was able to stuff Lullo's takedown attempts and turn it into clinch work in the second round. Lullo returned several of his kicks but they weren't as damaging as Peralta's.

Lullo improved as the fight went on, but still had trouble overcoming Peralta's kicks and takedown defense. Lullo finally got him down near the end of the third round. He took Peralta's back, but couldn't finish the fight.� The judges called it 30-27, 30-27, 29-28 for Peralta.

Waldburger shows submission magic

T.J. Waldburger started the fight with fireworks, throwing a flying knee, then following Stumpf to the ground to damage him with strikes, then work him with jiu-jitsu. Stumpf, who took the fight on short notice, was able to get out and meet Waldburger with his own knee, but then Waldburger was able to get another takedown. From there, he put on a jiu-jitsu clinic, starting with an armbar before transitioning into a triangle choke. Stumpf tapped at 3:52.

You tell us: What country should the UFC visit next?

The UFC's recent trip to Brazil and planned return to Japan is one of the promotion's latest signals that they are serious about becoming well-known internationally. They have also opened offices to cover Europe, Asia and Canada and signed TV deals all over the world.

Clearly, their trip around the world won't end with Japan in February. Where should the UFC head next?

China: The world's most-populated country is attractive to all American companies because of its many, many consumers. The UFC opened an office in China last June, and they want to reach the 250 million men who fall into their favorite, 18-49 demographic.

The Netherlands: The home of Alistair Overeem, Marloes Coenen, Golden Glory, Mike's Gym and some of the world's best kickboxing could also be a perfect destination for the UFC, if given a card full of kickboxing talent.

Senegal: Before you say, "Really? Senegal?" Watch this:

That's Senegalese wrestling, an awesome sport that resembles MMA. The UFC could find their next great talent pool there, and start working on African consumers in one of its most politically stable countries. Let's go to Dakar, UFC!

Russia: The home country of Fedor Emelianenko is also home to the world's best wrestling. A large event in Moscow, if promoted correctly with Emelianenko's help (which is unlikely), could convert fans of Buvaisar Saitiev into fans of Anderson Silva.

Thailand: UFC fighters have been heading to Thailand to learn Muay Thai from the experts for years. With Muay Thai's popularity, there is a market for combat sports. The current political situation could keep the UFC out of Phuket or Bangkok, but if things improve, either city could be an interesting destination for fights.

Bellator 50 Results: Baker TKO's Hess While Shlemenko, Rogers, Vianna Advance

Displaying the ferocious intensity that earned him his nickname, Bryan "the Beast" Baker overpowered the durable Jared Hess, becoming the first man ever to finish him with a third-round TKO in the main event of Bellator 50.

Baker (16-2) wore Hess out over the duration of the bout, and finally took his back and flattened him out early in the third before a hail of strikes forced the referee to call a halt to the action at 2:52 of the round.

With the win, Baker advanced to the Bellator middleweight semifinals, along with last night's three other main card victors.

Baker, one of the pre-tournament favorites, hopes to make it through the field and earn a shot at middleweight champion Hector Lombard. But before then, he has unfinished business with Alexander Shlemenko, who defeated him in June 2010. At the time, Baker was fighting shortly after being diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, a fact unknown to few but those in his inner circle.

Now fully healthy, Baker has won three straight, with back-to-back finishes of Hess and Joe Riggs.

The bout with Hess was no cakewalk. The first round in particular was full of wild scrambles and a series of momentum swings that made for great drama. But while Baker came out for the second round looking full of energy, Hess appeared low on gas, and Baker took the fight over until earning the finish.

Baker may get his rematch with Shlemenko, who began his bid for another middleweight title shot with a strong performance, earning a first-round submission victory over Zelg Galesic.

The two were fighting off the fence about 90 seconds into the round when Shlemenko let go of a muay thai clinch and quickly transitioned into a standing guillotine. Galesic found himself trapped against the cage and Shlemenko tightened the hold, forcing the tapout at 1:55 of the round.

The win moves Shlemenko to the semifinals. In season two, he advanced to the finals before losing to champion Hector Lombard in a five-round decision.

"I'm very happy, and I want Hector to be ready, because I'm going to get him," said Shlemenko (41-7).

Shlemenko wasn't the only middleweight with a quick finish Saturday night. Brian Rogers also closed out his fight in less than two minutes, earning a TKO win over Victor O'Donnell.

The finish, though, was somewhat controversial. O'Donnell was dropped by a Rogers' head kick in the corner, and Rogers followed him to the ground, where he landed a series of punches from the top. The referee stopped in to stop the action, but O'Donnell immediately protested, saying he was still intelligently defending himself.

The decision stood, though, and the final time of the finish was 1:56.

"Honestly, I was surprised the ref stopped it, but I'll take it," Rogers said. "That's what I do, I finish."

Rogers improved to 8-2 with his seventh straight KO/TKO finish.

In the night's final quarterfinal, Vitor Vianna scraped by Sam Alvey in a close split-decision.

For the early part of the fight, Vianna landed the more impactful strikes but Alvey was the busier of the two fighters. Vianna (13-1-1) picked up the pace as the bout went on and earned several takedowns, though he could never hold Alvey down for long and never came close to submitting him. Vianna ended both the second and third rounds strong, perhaps stealing them late. In the second, he closed with a rear naked choke that was defended to the bell, and in the third he landed his best punch of the fight, a straight right, at the final bell.

Judges scored it 29-28, 29-28, 28-29.
