Brock Lesnar is still the baddest man on the planet. He's got a huge battle on his hands when he takes on Alistair Overeem, but if he can manage to make it past the first round, he's bound to outlast the big man in this matchup.
Lesnar has the raw power in his hands to duke it out with the best heavyweights in the world, but it's his ground game and quickness that make him a tall task for any fighter. His strong wrestling background and endurance gives him an advantage over Overeem in later rounds.
The critics have been relentless, calling Lesnar overrated after his loss to Cain Velasquez. Make no mistake about it, though, a first-round knockout against Velasquez doesn't mean Lesnar's career is down for the count.
Overeem is an incredibly talented fighter. It's the perfect fight for Lesnar to jump back into the octagon with, if he can come away with a huge victory over a worthy adversary.
Overeem is confident that this fight will end quickly, saying, "I'm going to do what I do best. I expect him to do what he does best. This fight is not going to go the distance, that's one thing for certain."
He could be right. If both fighters come out swinging, intent on knocking their opponent out in a first-round massacre, obviously this fight is going to end quickly.
Overeem could be subject to a quick burnout, though. He's looking for a Velasquez-type of fight against Lesnar. If the opportunity to knock him out doesn't present itself, he's putting himself at risk.
Lesnar doesn't want to fade into the UFC background. This is a guy who, for a time, was all the rage of the UFC. A huge win could allow him to get his career back on track.
Given the all or nothing mentality Overeem is going in with, if Lesnar is able to avoid the initial onslaught, there is no reason he can't obtain a huge victory over Overeem.
