Aaron Riley Blog: Maintaining Balance in Training, UFN 25

Aaron Riley Blog: Maintaining Balance in Training, UFN 25

Less than two weeks away from my fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 135 and the train?or training I should say?keeps rolling!

Everything?s going great right now in camp. In fact, I actually just finished going to a yoga class. I try and do it a couple times every week to help balance my training ? to have sort of a meditative/rejuvenative aspect to things. You can only beat your body up so much, you know?

Also, earlier today Jon Jones and I hit up an ice bath and that was also really therapeutic and beneficial. Basically, it helps wash out inflammation in your body.

It?s amazing how much more goes into being a professional fighter than the average person might think. Maybe even other Mixed Martial Artists too. When people are younger in their careers they think it?s all about banging heads, sparring all the time. Later on you figure out sparring is a small part of the full equation. It?s about working on proper techniques and constantly, consistently drilling them. If you don?t acquire all the techniques you need or are doing them incorrectly because you never learned it right, and all you do is spar over and over, you?re practicing bad habits. Things like diet and nutrition, proper rest, and even other things like massages and ice baths can help balance your approach out. Instead of always tearing down your body, try and build it up.

One of our teammates here at Jackson?s MMA, Mike Lullo, is fighting Saturday night at the Battle on the Bayou so we?ll all be watching that here in New Mexico. It should be an exciting event, and I?d be willing to wager those guys will have a good time in the city of New Orleans afterwards. It?s a really cool place. As far as the main event, I don?t really know enough about either guy to make a good pick but I?ve known Jake Shields for a long time. I?d probably lean towards him but you can?t discount Jake Ellenberger either. I just don?t know enough about what he brings to the table. If Ellenberger?s stand-up is good that could be the way he wins since Shields doesn?t seem as comfortable in that department. Then again, he?s phenomenal on the ground, so it?s hard to say how that one will go.

Finally, this might surprise some people but I?m actually not a huge football fan. Sure, I watch the big game at the end of the year. Who doesn?t here in America? If I was really into the sport, I?m from the Washington D.C. area anyway so I wouldn?t have much to cheer for anyways, though I did hear the Redskins looked good last weekend.

Okay, back to the grind. Thanks for reading again and, as always, feel free to check in with me on Twitter (@aaronrileymma).
