News and notes from Strikeforce: Barnett vs. Kharitonov press conference

CINCINNATI -- In preparation for the semifinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix, the promotion's top fighters held court with media at the U.S. Bank Area. Here's what you need to know:

-- The start time is at 10:30 p.m. ET because of a documentary airing on Saturday night. Called "The Love We Make," it's a documentary about a show that Paul McCartney put together right after September 11. Strikeforce's bouts will start after that.

-- Daniel Cormier was added to the GP after Alistair Overeem -- who is now signed with the UFC -- dropped out of the tourney. Cormier isn't concerned about being a replacement adding extra pressure because he already puts pressure on himself.

"It's not that big of a deal to me. Pressure would be only if I didn't put high expectations on myself. I put enough pressure on myself to begin with, so being in this tournament could not add anything more."

He also said he was surprised that Overeem, or anyone would drop out of the tournament because it was such a good opportunity.

-- Mo Lawal said that he has been ready since January, but hasn't been able to get a fight until now. Though all of the major MMA media outlets were there, Lawal was disappointed in the turnout at the press conference.

"I was hoping there would be more media. More questions. Roger and me are going to put on a good fight, but everyone's going to miss it because they're worried about other issues."

-- Roger Gracie is known for his ground game, as he is a highly accomplished jiu-jitsu player. But with Lawal's world class wrestling background, Gracie may not be able to control where the bout will take place.

"It's hard to predict. Mo Lawal is a great wrestler. We'll just have to see and be prepared for everything. He's a good striker but an unbelievable wrestler. You try to plan a strategy, but you have to be prepared for everything," Gracie said.

Healy starts off Strikeforce main card with submission

CINCINNATI -- Pat Healy came from behind for a submission win over Maximo Blanco at Strikeforce on Saturday night.

Blanco quickly sent Healy to the canvas with a takedown. Healy was able to get back to his feet, but Blanco took over from there, knocking Healy around until with knees and punches until Healy was forced to shoot in for a takedown. It didn't work, as Blanco took top position. Healy grabbed Blanco's leg, which forced an odd position where he put his hands on the ground, and kicked back at Healy's head. Since Healy was a downed opponent, the move was illegal. A point was deducted, and Healy was given time to recover.

When the fight restarted, Blanco started with a quick flurry before Healy took over with a takedown and short strikes.

In� the second, Blanco's striking was worlds ahead of a much slower Healy's. He landed several strikes unanswered, but Healy was able to control the bout at times with wrestling. At one point, he was close to choking Blanco out, until he was able to maneuver out. Late in the round, Healy rolled into the same rear naked choke. This time, he held on for long enough for Blanco to tap at 4:24 in the second round.

This is Healy's third win in a row. His last two were decision wins, so this sort of come from behind victory was a nice change of pace. After a long career with Sengoku, this was Blanco's Strikeforce debut. His record falls to 8-3-1, while Healy's moves to 26-16.

Off UFC 137, Nick Diaz speaks his mind via YouTube

In a matter of days, Nick Diaz went from headlining UFC 137 in the title fight against Georges St-Pierre that he has asked about for years to a much-maligned man without a fight. He did not show up for multiple press obligations, with a no-show at today's press conference in Las Vegas being the breaking point for UFC officials. In what was supposed to be a routine pre-fight press conference, Dana White announced that Diaz was off the card and that Carlos Condit would step in to fight GSP for the UFC welterweight title.

Now, Diaz spoke his mind through his YouTube channel. Be warned that this video contains NSFW language.

Entitled, "Looks like someone didn't want me to win," it's possible that Diaz will spin this as a grand conspiracy to keep the belt in GSP's hands, but it's just not true. Diaz had the opportunity that he has begged for within his reach, but he had to "play the game," as Dana White would say. Show up for media appearances. Talk to reporters. Sell the fight.

Diaz didn't want to do that. Guess what, Nick? Everyone has a part of their job that they hate. Filling out timesheets. Cashing out drawers. Speaking at board meetings. Cleaning counters. Playing politics. For me, it's transcribing interviews. But you do it so that you can do the part of your job that you love and get paid.

Few fighters want to break camp to talk to media, but it's what they do so that they can headline fight cards and walk away with a big paycheck. Fighters have done it before, and they'll happily do it again for the chance that Diaz walked away from.

Instead of filming videos and wondering what happened, Diaz should take a hard look at himself and ask why he sabotages himself when he gets so close to the top of the mountain.

B.J. Penn doesn?t want to make it personal against Nick Diaz

In last week's UFC 137 switcheroo, B.J. Penn ended up facing Nick Diaz instead of Carlos Condit. Because of that, the producers of "Countdown," the show that airs to hype up UFC cards, had to work with Penn again to make the show suitable for the new line-up.

Penn says that the UFC asked him to say Diaz's name and "I'm going to beat Nick Diaz," something Penn found a problem with.

A few things to mention here:

1. Countdown's role is to hype up fights. Of course they want Penn to say something about his opponent. That will help sell pay-per-views, which is a good goal for everyone, right?

2. Penn has threatened to lick blood off his opponents. He has trash-talked before every fight, except for when he fought his friend Matt Hughes. Now he's worried about saying, "I'm going to beat Nick Diaz?" C'mon, son.

3. He says that he is worried that Diaz will be edited to look like a bad guy. Really, B.J.? This video was not edited, and Diaz still didn't come out looking that hot.

If Penn doesn't want to talk trash, that's fine. But that's not what he was asked to do. He was asked to say he was going to win the fight. Is that really all that bad?

UFC Live Blog: Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang Updates

NEW ORLEANS - This is the UFC Fight Night 25 live blog for Court McGee vs. Dongi Yang, a middleweight bout on tonight's UFC on Spike telecast from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

McGee (13-1, 2-0 UFC), the winner of Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter," has not competed since a submission win over Ryan Jensen at UFC 121 last October. It was his second straight submission win after tapping out Kris McCray to win TUF 11.

Yang (10-1, 1-1 UFC) is coming off a TKO victory over Rob Kimmons at UFC on Versus 3 in March. Prior to that, he dropped a split decision to Chris Carmozzi at UFC 121 in his UFC debut, which also was the South Korean's first fight in the United States.

Round 1: McGee opens with a leg kick followed by traded jab fakes. Not much happening for 90 seconds, but Yang lands a kick and a punch, then ducks out of the way of McGee's combo until McGee lands a right uppercut. Inside leg kick from Yang lands, and a right cross from McGee just misses. Another inside leg kick from Yang hits, then another, and he just dodges a high kick from McGee. The crowd starts chanting for more action. A left from McGee lands, and it looks like Yang slips and hits the mat for a second. Another couple good kicks from Yang. He's landing them reguarly, but McGee is coming forward a little more. It's a close round. We'll give it to Yang 10-9 based on the leg kicks, but it could go either way.

Round 2: Nice combo from McGee gets things started. Yang ducks under a punch, but McGee rushes in looking for a takedown. He can't get it and we go back to the center 90 seconds into the round. A long stall of not much action beyond traded jabs and some OK inside leg kicks, but with 90 seconds left McGee lands a nice 1-2. The crowd is booing and wants more than it's getting from this fight. High kick from McGee finds the mark, but not enough to drop Yang. But a couple short uppercuts hit home and wobble Yang briefly. It's a 10-9 second round for McGee on our card.

Round 3: Good jab from Yang lands. McGee looks briefly for a takedown, but it's not there, and he backs out of Yang's counter. We trade jabs and then out of nowhere, Yang lands a left that drops McGee, and as McGee gets back up Yang lands a knee moving in. We move into rock 'em sock 'em robots mode all of a sudden with 2:40 left, and the crowd appreciates it greatly. Both fighters are cut up on the face. They clinch and look for a takedown, but no dice. Yang now is bleeding a little more, and he spits some blood out onto the canvas. McGee is coming forward and just misses a roundhouse kick. He shoots for a takedown, but Yang defends. They clinch, and McGee gets a nice takedown, then looks to transition to mount but Yang gets up. McGee goes for a tired shot and somehow gets a short takedown. He lands some good elbows at the 10-second mark, then looks to lock in a choke. Yang survives the round, but it's an obvious 10-9 for McGee. We've got the fight for him 29-28.

Result: Court McGee def. Dongi Yang, unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-28)

More fights on Facebook! Bamma will stream Trigg, Daley and Winner bouts

It's just gets better each day for fans of mixed martial arts.

Saturday should be awesome as we find who'll advance to the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix finals (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT). You want some fighting in the afternoon? England's Bamma has your ticket with a freeview on the Bamma Facebook page.

Bamma 7 in Birmingham, England includes UFC veterans Frank Trigg, Paul Daley and Andre Winner. In total, Bamma's Facebook page will air seven fights starting at 2:15 p.m. ET.

Trigg clashes with Jim Wallhead. Wallhead (21-6) has been regarded as one of the U.K's top welterweights for years. He most recently fought two times in the U.S. for Bellator. He lost to Rick Hawn and beat Ryan Thomas. Trigg, 38, twice challenge Matt Hughes for the UFC welterweight title, and is 6-2 in his last eight fights.

Daley� (27-11) is fighting another UFC veteran Jordan Radev. Back in 2007, Radev (23-4) fought twice for the UFC posting losses against Dean Lister and Drew McFedries. Daley is trying to snap a two-fight streak that he suffered with Strikeforce. He already has a fight scheduled in Canada in five and half weeks against Luigi Fioravanti. Daley must be confident he'll walk away unscathed from this Radev tilt.

Winner (11-6, 2-4 UFC) was just dropped from the UFC with a three-fight losing streak.� A native of St. George's, Grenada and then Leicester, England, this is Winner's first fight back in the U.K. since 2008. Winner, 29, faces Jason Ball.

Jake Ellenberger: "The Juggernaut" Has Earned the Right to Be Called a Contender

"The Juggernaut" may very well be the perfect nickname for UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger, as he has just been running through his opponent.

Last night, Ellenberger won a quick TKO victory over former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields. A TKO is impressive by itself. A TKO in the first minute of the fight, even more impressive.

A TKO over a man who has only ever been finished once, and could not be finished by Dan Henderson, is about as impressive as it can be.

Ellenberger showed great poise in his biggest fight thus far in his UFC career, and made Shields look as if he were the one trying to break into contendership. He managed to throw Shields down as soon as they entered the clinch, and shrugged off a takedown attempt on the cage soon after. As Shields once again tried for a takedown, Ellenberger managed to get a hold of a Muay Thai plum clinch, and landed two knees, the latter which hit Shields on the chin and sent him flying to the canvas. Ellenberger finished him off with some good ground and pound, leaving Shields so removed from his senses that he attempted a takedown on the referee.

Ellenberger has been on a tear through the division ever since losing a split decision to Carlos Condit, who is now scheduled to fight Georges St. Pierre for the title at UFC 137 in his UFC debut. He has finished four of his last five fights, and is primed to become a serious contender in the division.

Ellenberger is part of the new breed of welterweight: he is multi-dimensional, fluid in transitioning from one facet of the fight to the other and is a finisher. Yet, he manages to stay unique within his division. He is almost like a smaller version of Dan Henderson, using his wrestling to keep the fight standing, and always looking for the KO. After being fed middle-of-the-pack fighters, this victory should push him into the upper echelons.

Now, the question is, is he good enough to dethrone GSP? St. Pierre is regarded as one of the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and has not looked human since losing to Matt Serra by TKO at UFC 69, and has not come close to losing since. No one has implemented a game plan that has even made GSP worried, outside of an eye poke (sorry Shields, someone had to say it). It would be quite the task for Ellenberger to present a threat to the champion.

Personally, I like Ellenberger's chances. Well, let me rephrase that; I like Ellenberger's chances better than most in the division. He has dynamite in his hands, has top caliber wrestling and comes to fight, unlike many of St. Pierre's other opponents, but that in no way means that he is able to take the belt from "Rush," or is even ready to try. The last dangerous striker St.Pierre fought was Thiago Alves, and St. Pierre put on a wrestling clinic. The last great wrestler he fought was Josh Koscheck, and he jabbed Koscheck's eye into oblivion, while managing to take him down as well. At this point, St.Pierre still seems unbeatable inside his division, and, this writer thinks he will not give any reason to the fans to have hope for a different champion any time soon.

Ellenberger needs at least one more impressive win before he is thrown into the biggest fight of his life. If he wins another fight against a top contender (the winner of Jon Fitch-Jonny Hendricks comes to mind) and in impressive fashion, it will be nigh on impossible to deny the man his shot. Hopefully, he can give the champ the challenge he has been seeking inside his division. Until that day comes, "The Juggernaut" can be satisfied that he has solidified his place as a contender in one of the most competitive divisions in MMA.

Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC Fight Night 25

The lack of any bizarre finishes or fighter-interviewer confrontations may have buried UFC Fight Night 25 in the headlines, but there were no shortage of ups and downs in New Orleans on Saturday night.

It's time again to look at the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between after the UFC's most recent offering.

Biggest Winner: Jake Ellenberger
A 53-second TKO win over a guy who hasn't been finished in over a decade? Yeah, that's pretty huge, especially since that guy went five rounds with the champ in a losing effort just five months ago. But now what do you do with Ellenberger? He's won five straight in the UFC, with only one of those fights going the distance, and yet he's had trouble gaining traction in the contender conversation at welterweight. This win should change that, but how much? The only people who were surprised to see Ellenberger win this fight were those who hadn't followed his career before now. He's a superb athlete, a well-rounded fighter with no glaring weakness, and -- maybe soon -- a top contender.

Biggest Loser: Jason MacDonald
With the loss to Belcher, "The Athlete" fell to 1-2 in his latest UFC run. Even worse is that he did not look good doing it. MacDonald's plan seemed to be to get Belcher to the mat however possible, even if he had to pull him straight into his guard. But as soon as Belcher stung him with a couple elbows from the top, MacDonald looked like he might be considering other ways to spend a Saturday night. There's no shame in losing to a quality middleweight like Belcher, but when you don't put up much of a fight it makes people wonder: does MacDonald still really want to be doing this for a living, or is it just the best idea he can think of at the moment? If you're not all the way in this sport, there are plenty of guys who can help you all the way out -- but they aren't going to be nice about it.

Most Sympathetic: Jake Shields
We could argue over whether his loss had anything to do with him fighting just a few weeks after the death of his father (who was also his manager), but it doesn't matter. The mere fact that he didn't drop out of this fight, that he kept going to the gym and walked in that cage when his name was called tells you a lot about his character and his determination. I don't know how he did it, nor do I know if, in the end, it was such a good idea. I just hope the UFC appreciates the kind of person and fighter they have here. A lot of the guys on the roster wouldn't have done what he did, and nobody could have blamed them. Shields stepped up and got beat, but no one can question his mental toughness. At least now he'll get some time to go home and grieve.

Best Prospect: Erik Koch
He's now won four straight dating back to his WEC days, and two in a row in the UFC. The solid takedown defense he showed against Brookins compliments his stand-up game well, even if you'd still like to see him get a little more aggressive with his striking when he's finding his target as easily as he did on Saturday night. Still, he's got a ton of potential and he's not yet 23 years old. I don't know where Duke Roufus finds these lumps of clay to mold to his liking, but he has something worth developing with Koch.

Not Quite Ready for Primetime: Jonathan Brookins
It's fine to go into a fight planning on taking it to the ground. But when you can't get it, you eventually have to change strategies. Brookins didn't, and after getting out-struck when the fight stayed at a distance, he had to know he wasn't going to win that decision. On one hand, maybe it's encouraging that he can stick to a game plan so well. On the other, when you can't get past step one of that game plan, it's time to look for a different path. Takedowns and top control might have been good enough to win TUF, but he's got to find something else to threaten people with if he's going to find success at the next level.

Least Affected by a Layoff: Alan Belcher
I admit, I was a little worried about how Belcher would look after being gone from the cage for the last 14 months. That's a tough chunk of time for a 27-year-old fighter to lose, and some need to ease back into action more than others. But as he was putting a serious hurt on MacDonald in the first round, Belcher looked as though he'd never left. We didn't get to see much of his timing on the feet, but his aggression and finishing instincts are still clearly intact. That's reassuring, because Belcher seemed like he was just finding his groove when those sudden eye issues halted his progress. Now that he's back, look out.

Stealthiest Ascent: Court McGee
It's got to be hard to know what to do with McGee, who is quietly stacking up wins. Nearly a year went by between his first post-TUF UFC bout and this decision win, and that time is critical when you're riding that fickle reality TV show fame. In his fight against Yang, as in his previous fight against Ryan Jensen, he started a little slow but showed impressive resiliency down the stretch. It's almost as if he needs to get nailed with a good shot before he steps his game up and gets serious about his offense. He's now 2-0 in the UFC since winning the reality show, but those two wins were stretched out over eleven months, so it's not as if there's a real groundswell of fan energy behind him. Maybe the best thing is for the UFC to keep gradually increasing the level of competition, hoping that he can stay healthy enough to stay in the picture. At least that beard makes him difficult to forget.

Just when Nick Diaz and Alistair Overeem were stealing all of the headlines, former UFC champion B.J. Penn has now thrown his name into the fray.

The manic Hawaiian was recently re-booked for UFC 137 with a new opponent.

Originally, Penn was to take on Carlos Condit in the co-main event of the evening.

However, due to Diaz's inability to attend pre-fight press junkets, UFC executives opted to replace the Stockton native with "The Natural Born Killer," who will now meet welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre for the title.

Penn will now face Diaz as the supporting act for the pay-per-view event, which takes place next month at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

The Hilo boy later met with the UFC production crew in his gym in Hawaii in an effort to record brand-new segments for the upcoming Countdown show, which regularly airs on Spike TV just a few days before the PPV event, in a calculated effort to pull in last-minute buys.

Later, Penn accused the party of instigating drama between him and his new opponent, Diaz, in order to stir up some entertaining answers from the filter-less fighter.

UFC president Dana White made it his own personal mission to expose Penn's embellishing of those claims, releasing an uncut version of the segment in question, exclusively to MixedMartialArts.com.

The video clearly shows a willing participant in Penn engaging in the usual pre-fight banter, with no direct influence and without the organization's asking the two-time champ to indulge in any un-pleasantries.

"Do you guys need that to make sure (Nick Diaz) signs the contract?" quipped "The Prodigy" during said interview.

The 32-year-old fighter later released a statement on BJPenn.com in regards to the flack he's picked up from the UFC head honchos, hoping to smooth over the obvious tension built:

"I never wanted to attack the UFC, people were calling and telling me Diaz wasn't going to sign and I got paranoid thinking they were going to use that clip to get him to sign the contract, my bad."
