Pascal Krauss out, Matt Brown in against John Hathaway at UFC 138

It looks like the return of welterweight Pascal Krauss will be delayed, as it was announced today that the undefeated German had to pull out of his UFC 138 bout against John Hathaway with a shoulder injury. UFC officials quickly found a more than suitable replacement though, calling up the always-game Matt Brown to step up for Krauss and challenge the Brit in his home country of England.

The bout change has been made official by the UFC.

Following a three fight losing streak, ?The Immortal? found his back against the wall this past June when he took on powerful welterweight John Howard. In need of a victory to keep his job, Brown took the fight to Howard and picked up a unanimous decision victory, keeping him employed for at least one more fight. The victory was the first time the Ohio native has ever won via the judges scorecards and only the third time in his 22 career fights that he?s been left his fate in the hands of the judges. Brown is known for his exciting style and his excellent chin, having never been knocked out in his career.

Looking to continue climbing back up the 170 ladder, Hathaway will try and build on a victory over Kris McCray at UFC Fight Night 24. Riding high after wins over Rick Story, Paul Taylor, and Diego Sanchez, ?The Hitman? was brought back to reality at UFC 120, getting out-grappled by veteran Mike Pyle. The loss was the first time Hathaway had tasted defeat in his career.

UFC 138 is scheduled for November 5 at the LG Arena in Birmingham, England. The event will be headlined by the first ever non-title five round fight between the heavy handed Chris Leben and all-american wrestler Mark Munoz.

UFC 134 Recap and What's Next for Each Main Card Fighter

UFC 134 has come to a close and there is many questions for each of the fighters, win or lose. The very successful UFC  was one of the most exciting main cards I can think of, which makes the results that much intriguing.I am also going to include what match-ups look the best for each fighter as they look to continue their careers.

Duane Ludwig?s quest to set the record straight

Duane Ludwig is going into surgery today to repair a compressed disc in his neck, but healing up from his win over Amir Sadollah at UFC on Versus 5 is not his only project. Ludwig also wants the Nevada Athletic Commission to correct the time of his knockout of Jonathan Goulet, which would give Ludwig the fastest KO in MMA.

To reach that goal, Ludwig has enlisted the help of his fans and other fighters. Via Twitter, he has asked fans to "like" his Facebook petition, and send emails to the commission. Todd Duffee, the current record holder with a KO of Tim Hague in seven seconds, even supports Ludwig, as shown in their picture together. Ludwig claims that the knockout happened in four seconds.

In 2006, Ludwig knocked Goulet out almost immediately from the bell, but the official timer recorded the time as 11 seconds. UFC commentator Joe Rogan picked up Ludwig's cause at the time, and still stumps for a time change every time he interviews Ludwig after a fight.

Ludwig isn't just relying just on a Facebook and email campaign to get Nevada officials to change their mind:

"The UFC sent me a copy of the DVD, so I'm going to send that off to the commission with a letter and then with a link to the Facebook [petition] I have," he said. "Hopefully that gets locked down. That would be cool."

It's a smart move to use both tactics. Though Facebook campaigns have worked to get Betty White on "Saturday Night Live," video evidence is probably more important to the good people of the Nevada Athletic Commission.

If you want to support Ludwig in his quest, like the Facebook page here, and find the email address to the NAC here.

Gil Martinez Blog: A Look at Rio, Gray Maynard, and the Gridiron

Gil Martinez Blog: A Look at Rio, Gray Maynard, and the Gridiron

I?m back for another week of my blog. Thanks to everyone has been reading them. I appreciate the feedback!

UFC 134 was over the weekend the card was great. Shogun showed that he?s back on the map and ready for the next step to get back towards a title shot. He beat Forrest Griffinwhich is a huge win. Forrest is a warrior and I felt bad for him.

And how are you supposed to beat Anderson Silva? He?s so accurate and relaxed. He just showed again why he?s one of the best P4P fighters in the UFC. With Silva, I don?t think his approach to attacking can be taught. You can give a fighter the basics but he is who he is ? his movement, his speed, and power ? he is amazing. He knocked Okami down with a jab, so that shows you what kind of power he has! That kind of stuff can?t be taught. You could only imitate it if you have someone who has that same movement. You either have it or you don?t and Silva just has it.

?Minotauro? Nogueira looked really good. I didn?t think that fight was going to go that way. You could tell that he?s been working on it. He?s tough. He can take a punch and not only that, but he looked really sharp. He?s tough to deal with because he?s good on the ground and his striking looked better than ever. He also has power because he hurt Schaub with a couple of shots. He?s also back on track, a few more wins, and who knows what could happen.

In general, I was excited to see how much striking was involved on the card. It kind of goes in circles, and I?m a big fight fan whether it?s ground or stand up, but I was happy to see so many fighters utilize their kickboxing/boxing. Pretty much everyone kept it striking and I think that makes it exciting for the fans. Submissions are great but there?s nothing like a knockout! A KO gets the crowd going and gets everyone excited. Now that more fighters get comfortable with their striking, I think we?re going to see more of it.

Back here in my world, I?ve been going down to LA to work with Mac Danzig. My main focus in Vegas right now is with Gray Maynard. I worked with Gray Maynard for his original run-in with Frankie Edgar. That was our first camp together and we?ve been working together ever since then. Gray works really hard. He definitely loves the sport and loves boxing. He likes to learn, so it?s easy and it?s a pleasure to work with him. He?s very professional and as a coach you can?t ask for a better guy. He?s there every day on time and does what he?s asked to do.

I?m also working with Mike Chandler for his fight with Eddie Alvarez. Mike fights a week after Gray so those are the two guys I?m devoting the bulk of my attention to.

Another exciting event is on the horizon ? the return of the NFL. I?m a Raider fan, so we?re not doing too well, though picking up Pryor was a positive. Our biggest problem is Al Davis. If we get rid of him, we could have a good team. I didn?t pick up the new Madden video game yet but I heard it is good. It would be cool to hold a tournament at the gym someday. Yes, even fighters like laying out other kinds of hits!

That?s it for this week. Stay tuned for future blogs. Remember, on top of reading about my adventures here, you can also find me on Twitter by following ?@mastermitter

A vicious head kick does the job as Curran takes featherweight tourney at Bellator 48

Pat Curran stood with one of the most feared knockout artists in the world at 145 pounds and beat Marlon Sandro in the race to land the first fight changing shot. Once he did, Sandro couldn't recover, and Curran took home another $100,000 check and another Bellator tournament title. Curran stopped Sandro with a brilliantly timed head kick to post the victory at the 4:00 mark of the second round at Bellator 48 in Uncasville, Ct.

The 23-year-old Curran has won 7-of-8. His resume of includes wins over Ronnie Mann, Roger Huerta, Toby Imada and Sandro. His only recent loss came via decision at lightweight against Eddie Alvarez, the No. 5 ranked 155-pounder in the world. Along with the big payday, Curran earns himself a future shot at the Bellator featherweight champ Joe Warren.

When it started back in June, Sandro (19-3) was a sizable favorite to win the tournament. The Brazilian entered last night's fight ranked No. 5 at featherweight while Curran (16-4) was way down at No. 19.

It was far from an easy night for Curran. Sandro, 34, was outpacing him and landing the more effective shots on the feet. The first round was close, but Cagewriter gave a slight edge to Sandro. In the second, Curran's output dipped and a Sandro overhand right with 3;30 left ripped open a nasty gash over the American's eye. Curran simply wasn't throwing enough shots to score. When he got a little more active, it quickly changed the direction of the fight.

Curran flicked out a double jab, Sandro ducked to his left to avoid the punches and that's when the American unleashed the head kick. It was perfect. Sandro's momentum took him right into Curran's right shin. Sandro went down in a heap and his arms fell to the side. Curran jumped on top and unloaded three more punches on the defenseless Brazilian. Referee Keith Peterson launched himself through the air to push Curran away and save Sandro.

5 MMA Fighters That Could Squash 'The Spider'

Who can beat Anderson Silva?

This topic has been debated over and over again. Fighters that propose a great style match for the pound-for-pound kingpin have stepped up and been dispatched of like first class amateurs.

Like many great fighters, Silva has an aura that mesmerizes even his peers. His opponents tend to sit back and watch what he does instead of implementing their own game plans.

For example, Yushin Okami, a strong grappler, only made one half-hearted attempt at a takedown in his UFC 134 bout against Silva. He basically sat there as Silva danced on the outside and landed the inevitable punch that would end the fight.

After cleaning out all of the notable challengers in the middleweight division, Silva is left at a crossroads of rematches and jumping weight classes.

It's tough to see Silva lose at this point, but as long as he keeps fighting, his time will come to take the inevitable plunge like the other all-time greats before himself.

If given the opportunity, here are five fighters with the best chance to squash "The Spider."

UFC 135: Early Breakdown of Jon Jones vs Rampage Jackson

With UFC 134 in the books, all eyes are pointed toward Jon Jones' first title defense at UFC 135.

He was originally slated to face Rashad Evans at UFC 133, but that fight was scrapped when Jones thought he had to have surgery on his hand.  Evans ended up signing up to fight Phil Davis instead, and Jones signed up to fight Rampage just two events later.

Will Jones handle Rampage the same way he handled Rua and Bader before him, or will Rampage put an abrupt end to the Jon Jones hype train with his first knockout in years?

Dana White interview: UFC president not seeing title rematches for Belfort or Fitch anytime soon

Dana White understands the desires of both Jon Fitch and Vitor Belfort to get back in the Octagon for a shot at UFC titles, but he's also got a promotion to run. Joining ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM's "The MMA Insiders" show on Friday, White said it's a tough to sell Jon Fitch against Georges St-Pierre again. The same goes for Belfort against UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Belfort doesn't believe that's the case. He wants the title shot and say Silva is afraid of him.

"If he didn't throw that kick, this would've happened to him. He knows that," Belfort said during the UFC 133 postfight press conference. "I would like to fight the winner of [Yushin] Okami and Anderson [at UFC 134]."

White was shocked by Belfort's words.

"Craziest statement ever made. 'Listen, if he didn't knock me out I would've won that fight!' Yeah, okay. Maybe," laughed White (8:25 mark).

That said, White is an admirer of Belfort. He just wants to see more consistency out of the veteran.

"The problem with a guy like Vitor Belfort is he's one of the best in the world [but] Vitor is just inconsistent," White said. "[...] Vitor Belfort needs to get into a consistent game where every fight looks like the Akiyama fight. Even if he goes in against a guy and it's an absolute war, at least Vitor Belfort went in and let his hands go."

Belfort has a lot of work to get done before he gets in there again with Silva.

"Vitor Belfort went in against Anderson Silva and got hit with a front kick and got knocked out in the first 30 seconds of the fight. Who does he gotta to beat and how long's he gotta go before you want to see him fight Anderson Silva again? Maybe a couple of Akiyama type knockouts and maybe we are ready to see him face Anderson again," White said.

Jon Jones Responds to Spying Accusations

UFC Light Heavyweight Jon Jones

On Monday, Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson claimed he had a rat in his training camp that was relaying information to Jon Jones. Although he never accused Jones of planting the snitch himself, he suggested it may have been Jones? manager, Malki Kawa, that masterminded the scheme.

Kawa vehemently denied any wrongdoing, and today, the reigning light heavyweight champion took to his Twitter and did the same.

?@Rampage4realJust so you know, I?m not a person who looks for shortcuts in life. Unlike you, MMA is not something I do because of money,? Jones tweeted. ?It?s a way of life for me and I would never disrespect the integrity of that. I have way more faith in myself, as well as, respect for the art of fighting to ever stoop that low, thats just bad karma.

?Believe me or not, I?ve said my part.. hoping you have a safe and healthy finish to your camp..#Respect?

Last week, Rampage had a hunch that someone was spying on him. He proceeded to concoct a story that his hand was injured, and just hours after revealing the top secret info to his training partners, UFC matchmaker Joe Silva was on the horn with Rampage?s manager to confirm the news.

Anthony McGann assured Silva that his client was healthy, but asked where he had heard the fictitious tale. Silva said he received a call from Kawa.

Rampage believes he?s discovered who has been spilling the beans. He has since handled the matter privately, but won?t publicly put the rat on blast.

Jones defends his throne against Rampage at UFC 135 inside the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The 205-pounders will headline the September 24th pay-per-view broadcast.

Nogueira pulls upset and KOs Schaub at UFC 134

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira showed that he still has plenty of fight left in him, as he scored a first-round TKO over Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 on Saturday night. Noguiera's win came after an 18-month layoff following a loss to current UFC champion Cain Velasquez.

As the bout started, Schaub immediately relied on the clinch, but Nogueira was able to push him off and return to stand-up. Schaub landed uppercuts early, slowing Nogueira after each punch landed. But Nogueira stayed aggressive and wobbled Schaub with a two-punch combination, then followed up with strikes until Schaub fell to the ground. Referee Herb Dean stepped in and stopped the fight at 3:09.

Nogueira had faced a rash of injuries, and even admitted that he hurried his rehab from a knee injury so that he could fight in front of his home crowd, the first time in the former PRIDE and UFC champion's illustrious career that he fought professionally in his home country. The crowd was clearly appreciative of his efforts. The fans erupted in cheers as he walked out, and yelled with every punch he threw. The HSBC Arena, located just miles from Nogueira's gym, went bonkers when he won, as drinks were thrown about and noise seemed to hit a new level for the UFC.

Since losing "The Ultimate Fighter" finale to Roy Nelson, Schaub had four wins in a row. However, Nogueira showed that Schaub still has plenty to learn before he leaps to the next level of UFC heavyweights.

Best Of The Rest: UFC 134 Edition

Best Of The Rest: UFC 134 Edition

Hello and welcome to another new edition of ?Best of the Rest?! I really enjoy taking the time to give my detailed thoughts on a show after watching it, but after the serious discussion and debate I?ll raise in topics like ?Top 5 Best Moments? and ?Best Performance of the Night?, I think it?d be nice to have a semi-serious, occasionally tongue-in-cheek topic where I give out some other ?awards?. It?s all in good fun, although I?ll raise a serious point occasionally. So let?s dive right into this latest edition, now featuring UFC 134 ?Silva vs. Okami?.

The ?Other Silva? Award: This one goes to Eric Silva, who looked pretty darn amazing in one of the best preliminary fights of the UFC 134 broadcast. Silva came in with a lot of hype, and he left with even more. Silva?s sledgehammer right to the jaw of his opponent is certainly a sight I won?t be forgetting for quite some time.

The ?Strike Two? Award: Rousimar Palhares, for continuing to pull bafflingly-stupid stunts inside the Octagon, one of which already cost him a fight, and now this second time against Dan Miller that almost cost him this fight as well. Let?s not forget that Palhares also got in a lot of trouble for keeping a submission locked in past the tap, with his opponent screaming and the referee trying to pry Palhares off. Rousimar Palhares is a talented individual, but his bizarre personality coupled with an even more bizarre penchant for losing his head inside the Octagon makes me believe that he?ll never be more than a mid-level Middleweight and certainly never a marketable star.

The Spoiler Award: This one goes to Stanislav Nedkov. In a night dominated by the UFC?s Brazilian fighters bringing home the win in a big way in front of their friends and family, Nedkov kicked off the Pay-Per-View broadcast by completely manhandling Luiz Cane. In fact, this was the only fight on the entire card that featured a Brazilian fighting and losing. Nedkov may not have made himself any friends in Brazil, but he sure put on a very entertaining performance.

The Phoenix Award: Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, for rising from the ashes of several sobering losses and several major surgeries. Nogueira looked amazing at UFC 134, and breathed new life into his ailing career with a dramatic stoppage win over Brendan Schaub. UFC President Dana White recently revealed that he was ready to have ?the retirement talk? with Nogueira if ?Big Nog? lost this match, instead, Nogueira fans are debating how many fights he needs to win before he gets a title shot. Now that?s definitely something to talk about.

The ?On Again, Off Again? Award: I?m giving this award to both participants of the UFC 134 co-main event, Mauricio Rua and Forrest Griffin. Both men have an unfortunate track record that?s only been established recently: they can look amazing in one fight and look like crap in their very next fight. Of course there are extenuating circumstances for each occasion, but it?s undeniable that both men have been very hit-and-miss with their performances lately.

So that?s what I think, and remember, it?s all in good fun? mostly.

Wilson Reis handed Joe Soto?s spot in Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament

Bellator?s Joe Soto has had a rough go of it as late. Though the 24-year old started his career out with nine straight victories including a title-win in Bellator?s inaugural 145-pound tournament, Soto has dropped two in a row with the losses only being part of his problems.

The first defeat came to current champ Joe Warren after dominating him in the opening round only to get knocked out cold less than a minute into the second stanza. Worst yet, Soto suffered a detached retina in the bout and was sidelined for nearly a year before his return earlier this month at Tachi Palace Fights 10. Compounding his woes, Soto was submitted by talented up-and-comer Eddie Yagin and as a result has now lost his slot in the Bellator Season 5 Bantamweight Tournament starting September 24.

Replacing Soto will be a man he originally beat en route to becoming featherweight champion, Wilson Reis. The 12-3 Brazilian will be making his bantamweight debut in Bellator when he faces youngster Eduardo Dantas who is currently on a three-fight winning streak with all three instances of success involving a finishing performance.

In addition to Reis vs. Dantas, the rest of the 135-pound field competing at Bellator 51 features Ed West vs. Luis Nogueira, Marcos Galvao vs. Chase Beebe, and Warren vs. Alexis Vila.

Barboza picks apart Pearson for win at UFC 134

Edson Barboza was simply too long and fast for Ross Pearson tonight at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro. The 5-foot-11 Barboza stayed on the move for 15 minutes and picked his shots on the way to a split decision victory 29-28 on the two cards and 28-29 on the other.

Pearson did well to survive against a guy who's looked spectacular at times in previous fights. Barboza's best weapon are his kicks. Pearson decided to push forward and close space for most of the night. His face showed the affect.

By the end of the fight, he had a good size hematoma over his left eye and a cut above his right eye. When there was space, Barboza (9-0, 3-0 UFC) did his biggest damage with some nifty spinning kicks.

Pearson, the champ from Season 9 of "The Ultimate Fighter," is now 5-2 in his official UFC fights. He looked a little beefier than normal for this one. Pearson's lack of speed made him an easy target for Barboza.

The judges were split on the fight. the number may back up the judge who chose Pearson. According to FightMetric, the Brit actually outlanded Barboza 60-55. Who landed the more significant, powerful shots? That can be debated. Check the fighter's faces at the close of the fight. Barboza wasn't showing much damage.

Belfort, Anderson and more: the state of MMA in Brazil today

It's been nearly 13 years since the UFC last visited Brazil, the cradle of the sport. At UFC: Brazil, held October 10, 1998 in Sao Paulo, Vitor Belfort TKOed Wanderlei Silva, in Belfort's first fight at 205 lbs. and Silva's UFC debut. Frank Shamrock submitted John Lober in the main event to defend the UFC middleweight belt, and Pedro Rizzo and Pat Miletich both walked away with wins.

Since then, the UFC has changed just a bit. The UFC was purchased by the Fertitta brothers and Dana White, a reality show widened its reach, and the sponsors upgraded from Mickey's Malt Liquor to Budweiser. Through it all, Brazil's crucial role as the birthplace of great fighters has not changed. From Royce Gracie to Anderson Silva, many of the UFC's best call Brazil home.

This Saturday at UFC 134, the UFC finally returns. What should American MMA fans know about the sport in Brazil these days? Fernando Zanchetta, the MMA blogger for Yahoo! Sports Brazil, answered Cagewriter's questions.

Cagewriter: What is the biggest sport in Brazil?
Fernando Zanchetta: Soccer continues as the biggest sport in the country, and this will not change anytime soon. The sport is an integral part of Brazilian culture with a huge advantage over all others. Second, currently, I'd say it's volleyball, especially after the results in the Olympic Games. The country has many sports other sports it goes crazy about, too, as happened with tennis and F1, but depends only on a few stars.

MMA in Brazil still suffers a lot of prejudice. But I can say that the amount of good fighters has increased gradually, and that it has potential to follow closely the other two (soccer and volleyball).

CW: Who is Brazil's most popular fighter?
FZ: Vitor Belfort (pictured) is still the most popular of the mainstream public. He's fighting since he was 19, married a supermodel (Joana Prado) and participated in a very successful reality show at the beginning of the decade.

Last year, Anderson Silva won many fans, signed important contracts with major brands and learned how to deal better with the press. The knockout against Belfort had a great impact to the world of combat sports in the country. This will increase absurdly after UFC 134, which will be the first broadcast on open television channel in Brazil.

CW: Is MMA big in certain cities, or all over the country?

FZ: The headquarters is still Rio de Janeiro. That's where most folks want to go to evolve technically. Curitiba no longer has the same force like it did at the beginning of the decade, but follows behind Rio. Sao Paulo is the largest city, but still has only a few fighters with international fame (like Demian Maia and Luiz Cane).

The north of Brazil also brings good surprises and becomes well known as a center of hard fighting at Belm do Par and Natal, land of brothers Patrick and Patricky Freire.

CW: Are fighters still learning from luta livre or just jiu-jitsu?
FZ: Luta livre haven't developed as much as jiu-jitsu, which was the major export product of its kind in the 1990s. Today is just a sport restricted to Rio and some gyms outside Brazil. Jiu-jitsu evolution continues around the world.

CW: Are there any young stars that MMA fans should watch for?
FZ: Erick Silva, Freire brothers, Marcelo Magro, John Lineker, and Francisco Massaranduba are among the best to watch.

CW: What else should American MMA fans know about MMA in Brazil?

FZ: Brazil is the birthplace of the sport and it will never change. But there are still remnants of the time when the Vale Tudo was marginalized by the media and society. Now people seem to understand that MMA is a professional sport. There are more specialized media and people are more interested in fights, fighters and all stuff related to it. The new generation of fighters are beginning to take their first -- and good -- steps too.

Obrigado to Fernando for his time. Read Casca Grossa, the Brazilian Yahoo! Sports MMA blog.

Daniel Cormier Has Message for Wrestling's Critics: 'Learn Takedown Defense'

Daniel Cormier has a message for critics of wrestlers, and it doesn't sound like he's going to budge on it anytime soon.

Cormier, one of the most decorated college and amateur wrestlers ever to break into mixed martial arts, has found himself smack-dab in the middle of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix against Antonio Silva in the semifinals. And while he believes the fight is his most important test to date, he isn't going to apologize for being a wrestler.

Simply put, the unbeaten heavyweight believes if his opponent can't stop his takedowns, well ... too bad.

"It's not my job, it's not Jon Fitch's job, it's not Josh Barnett's job to actually teach someone takedown defense," Cormier said Tuesday during a media call. "It's their job to learn takedown defense. If they can't defend the takedown, then they deserve to lay on their back for 15 minutes."

While other fighters accused by fans and other fighters of being "lay and pray" practitioners have often tiptoed around the accusations, Cormier is more to the point.

Cormier (8-0, 5-0 Strikeforce) was inserted into the heavyweight tournament as an alternate after Zuffa suddenly cut Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem earlier this summer. After six straight stoppage wins to start his pro career, including five in the first round, Cormier has won back-to-back decisions, both scorecard sweeps.

Against Devin Cole in January, Cormier landed three takedowns. But against Jeff Monson in June, he attempted just two and instead dominated the fight in the standup game. According to FightMetric, Cormier out-struck Monson 110-19 in the fight. So as his overall MMA game progresses, Cormier knows he'll have to fall back on other skill sets besides his world-class wrestling.

"I think it's always good to put on exciting fights," Cormier said. "I like to fight. This is my job. If that means I have to stand with him and fight, then I have to fight. What if I can't take him down? But at the end of the day, it's about winning."

Which might just be Cormier's way of saying that standing and banging may look fun from outside the cage, but he may think twice about being on the receiving end of "Bigfoot" Silva's paws - especially since Silva is coming off a devastating TKO stoppage of Fedor Emelianenko in February.

"Why should I or anyone else that knows how to wrestle give up their biggest advantage?," Cormier said. "If a jiu-jitsu guy can get you down, he's going to use his jiu-jitsu. If a striker can keep you standing, he's going to use his standup ability. It's your job, which MMA is, which fighting is, to learn all areas of the game."

Silva (16-2, 3-1 Strikeforce) has won three straight and nine of his last 10, including a TKO win over one of Cormier's American Kickboxing Academy heavyweight teammates, Mike Kyle. And though he is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, he's only submitted two fighters in his 16 wins. It's his heavy hands that seem to be feared the most.

Cormier, though, said that while getting hit in the face was foreign to him from his wrestling background when he started MMA, training at AKA - especially with UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasequez - has gotten him used to it.

"Nobody likes to get hit," Cormier said. "Wrestlers, kickboxers - nobody likes to get hit. But it doesn't affect me. I train with the No. 1 heavyweight in the world on a daily basis, so I actually get hit a lot. And not only from Cain, but from King Mo (Lawal) and Mike Kyle and all the guys I train with. I've adjusted to it because they beat me up so much."

Cormier and Silva fight Sept. 10 in one half of the semifinal bracket of Strikeforce's continuation of the heavyweight tournament in Cincinnati. The other side of the bracket features Josh Barnett vs. Sergei Kharitonov. The winners are expected to meet sometime in early 2012 for the tournament title.

UFC 134 picks, Vegas style: Okami is a huge underdog

The UFC stocked its Rio de Janeiro card with lots of Brazilian fighters, but according to the sports books and bettors that doesn't mean there's a ton of tight match ups at the top of card.

Yushin Okami is in the main event against Anderson Silva. He's got a 2006 win via disqualification over Silva, but he's still a massive underdog against the UFC middleweight champ.

This is also a big swing fight amongst sports books in Las Vegas and off-shore. Make sure you shop the odds. Some books have Silva as high as minus-625 and others have him at minus-450.

Okami is certainly intriguing as an underdog. The question is whether the Japanese grappling specialist can get the fight to the ground. Larry Pepe (ProMMARadio.com) and Damon Martin (MMAWeekly.com) on RawVegas.tv don't have a ton of confidence in the challenger.

UFC 134 betting odds (Courtesy Palazzo Sports Book Las Vegas):

Yushin Okami (+375) vs. Anderson Silva (-550) - UFC middleweight title

Forrest Griffin (+180) vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (-220) - Light heavyweight

Antonio "Rodrigo" Nogueira (+190) vs. Brendan Schaub (-240) - Heavyweight

Ross Pearson (+220) vs. Edson Barboza (-300) - Lightweight

Stanislav Nedkov (+170) vs. Luiz Cane (-200) - Light heavyweight

Spencer Fisher (+170) vs. Thiago Tavares (-200) - Lightweight

Dan Miller (+200) vs. Rousimar Palhares (-250) - Middleweight

David Mitchell (+300) vs. Paulo Thiago (-400) - Welterweight

Luis Ramos (+220) vs. Erick Silva (-300) - Welterweight

Yves Jabouin (+150) vs. Ian Loveland (-180) -Bantamweight

Felipe Arantes (+300) vs. Yuri Alcantara (-400) - Featherweight

Johnny Eduardo (+140) vs. Raphael Assuncao (-170) - Featherweight

Dana White Won't Rule Out Move to UFC for Alistair Overeem, Says 'We're Talking'

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The bridge between UFC president Dana White and former Strikeforce heavyweight champ Alistair Overeem may have been scorched a bit in recent weeks, but it apparently never caught fire and burned.

Even after Zuffa removed Overeem from the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix and released him from his contract, citing problems with his Golden Glory management team, the two sides are discussing a potential future together, White confirmed following the UFC 134 post-fight press conference.

"We're talking," White said. "You guys know how that whole thing went down. Golden Glory was in this position where we couldn't do business and they changed their position, which I respect. Now we can do business."

That position, of course, was an insistence on having all fighter purses funneled through Golden Glory rather than paid directly to the fighters themselves, according to White.

That was an arrangement that Zuffa simply couldn't work with, the UFC president said, and disagreements over it brought about the release of Overeem, as well as fellow Golden Glory fighters Marloes Coenen and Jon Olav Einemo.

"We're never going to be in a situation where we pay managers and not fighters," White said. "We pay fighters, and fighters pay managers. We're never going to be in that situation. I don't care who the guy is."

Then again, it didn't seem to help matters that Overeem had refused to fight on the September 10 date set for the semifinal round of the Grand Prix, insisting he wouldn't be ready until October.

But now that Golden Glory has softened their stance on payment issues, according to White, there's once again dialogue between the two sides regarding the Dutch heavyweight.

The question is, are they talking about bringing him back to Strikeforce, or injecting him into the UFC's heavyweight division, which could certainly use the infusion of big name talent right about now? After all, Golden Glory has expressed interest in signing a new contract with the UFC, so could that be Overeem's new home sooner rather than later?

"We'll see what happens," White said with a shrug.

In other words, nothing is out of the question at this point.

(Semtex is doin' work to get back in contention.) Paul Daley will have a busy next two months with back to back fights under two different banners in two different continents. The 27-11-2 British knockout artist who is 0-2 in his last two fights against Tyron Woodley and Nick Diaz is slated to take on Bulgarian welterweight and fellow UFC vet Jordan Radev (23-4) at BAMMA 7 September 10 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England. UFC on Versus 5?s Three Stars: Henderson, Lytle and Cerrone

The fighters delivered on the UFC's first trip to the Dairy State, giving exciting performances from the top to the bottom of the card. That made the task of picking out just three stars even tough. Cagewriter's picks are below. Tell us yours in the comments or on Facebook.

No. 1 star -- Ben Henderson: After losing the WEC belt to Anthony Pettis, the enduring image of "Smooth" was getting kicked in the face. He used that loss as fuel, first beating Mark Bocek at UFC 129, and then aggressively taking out Jim Miller on Sunday night. According to CompuStrike, Henderson outstruck Miller 148-26 and was 7-for-7 on takedown attempts.

No. 2 star -- Chris Lytle: Few athletes and even fewer fighters get to retire on a win. After 54 fights, 20 with the UFC, Lytle earned that honor with one last Fight of the Night performance, topped off with a Submission of the Night choke. Now, he'll have an extra $130,000 and a Harley-Davidson to help with his retirement.

No. 3 star -- Donald Cerrone: Before the UFC and WEC merger, "Cowboy" felt like the kid brother of the UFC's lightweight division, not quite getting the respect of his UFC brethren. After landing 24 power strikes to Charles Oliveira's four and TKOing the Brazilian in the first round, Cerrone joked that the little brothers had exacted their revenge.

MMA Marketplace: Get your own authentic MMA championship belt

To get an authentic MMA championship belt, you can put in years of hard work, sacrifice and training to earn it, or you can drop $1,600 on a WAMMA belt on eBay. Look, it's so shiny!

WAMMA was the organization that wanted to create an undisputed champ at every weight class, regardless of what promotion they fought in. Fedor Emelianenko held the WAMMA heavyweight title. In this picture from November 2009, Fabricio Werdum can be seen jokingly grabbing at Fedor's WAMMA belt, but WAMMA barely made a blip among most MMA fans.

What they did make was a pretty, pretty belt, and it can be yours for a starting bid at $1,595 plus shipping on eBay.

Lytle retires with a submission win at UFC on Versus 5

MILWAUKEE -- Chris Lytle ended his MMA career with a bang at UFC on Versus 5 on Sunday night. Just after he announced his retirement, Lytle submitted Dan Hardy in the third round.

The fight started with both fighters throwing big, looping strikes. Both Hardy and Lytle landed clean punches, but both showed off their strong chins. Neither fighter let up as the round wore on. Lytle appeared to land more, but Hardy was never wobbled.

In the second round, the two continued to trade leather. Again, Lytle had a slight advantage, but also sustained a cut. He landed several square shots on Hardy's noggin, and gave him several big bumps.

As Lytle went to his corner for the last time in his career, he smiled at his corner men. He was clearly enjoying his last fight in the UFC.

Blood and spit leaked out of Hardy's mouth in the third round, as he continued to take punishment from Lytle. Hardy still had good movement and was still landing some shots. He tried for a takedown in the final two minutes, but ended up with Lytle on top. Lytle smoothly sunk in a guillotine, and choked Hardy at 4:16 in the third round.

Not a person in the Bradley Center sat as the official decision was read. They booed at the idea that he was leaving MMA.

"I love being a part of the UFC almost more than everything, except one thing, and that's my family. It's time I start putting them first," Lytle said after his win.

No matter what happened, this fight was destined to be special. Lytle announced this weekend that this was his last fight. Always loved by fans for his hold-nothing-back style, Lytle got to have his final fight in the Midwest, just a drive away from his home in Indianapolis. He now gets to leave with a win under his belt.

For Hardy, it was a chance to show that he still belonged in the Octagon. He had been on a three-fight losing skid, starting with losing to Georges St. Pierre in a title bout. It's hard to say what the future will bring for him, but four losses in a row rarely brings longevity.

Tompkins died of a heart attack, funeral arrangements and memorial fund set

The mixed martial arts world is still reeling from the shocking passing of trainer Shawn Tompkins.

An autopsy revealed that the 37-year-old died from a heart attack in his sleep while staying at a friend's house in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Sunday.

"Shawn's family had a history of heart disease," said Tompkins' manager Gary Ibarra of Athletic Management & Representation Group (AMR) told the London Free Press. "Shawn had an enlarged heart and blocked arteries. No one had any idea. It really doesn't matter how much you exercise and what kind of shape you are in. That's why everyone is in such shock."

Tompkins was married to Sam Stout's sister Emilie. Stout, a UFC fighter, worked with Tompkins for years.

"I don't know what to say," Stout said. "It's not supposed to be happen to a healthy 37-year-old person. Who would think he had to get checked out for that?"

Tompkins worked out of Adrenaline Training Centre in London, Ontario and TapouT Training Center in Las Vegas, NV with Stout, Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki and Ronnie Mann. The former head coach at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Tompkins also cornered fighters like Randy Couture, Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, Jay Hieron, Forrest Griffin, Mark Coleman and Gray Maynard.

Cage Potato reports that a memorial fund has been set up.

[...] The Shawn Tompkins Memorial Fund, which is currently accepting contributions to assist Emilie with funeral and burial costs.

"Shawn was more than a client," Ibarra stated via press release. "His passion and vision for MMA was infectious, evident by how he could motivate his fighters to become better athletes and people. On behalf of AMR Group's athletes and staff, we extend our deepest sympathies to Emilie, Sam and Shawn's entire family. His spirit will live on in our hearts."

To contribute to Tompkins' memorial fund, send an email to TeamTompkins@ShogunMMA.com. Details of the memorial service will be announced in the coming days atAMRGroup.tv.

The funeral service at West Park Church in London is Friday at 1 p.m.
