Although it took place last week, new information continues to be released for strikeforce?s ?Overeem vs. Werdum? event. Just yesterday, the official medical suspensions for the event were made available. In addition to the live attendance figures and the Showtime ratings information, we now have a pretty clear picture on how successful this event was. Read on for the official medical suspensions, live attendance, gate receipts, and ratings for ?Overeem vs. Werdum?.
Let?s first head to MMA Junkie for the all-important dollars and cents. According to their report, ?Overeem vs. Werdum? drew 7,639 fans for a total gate of approximately $543,000. The website also lists an interesting comparison: the UFC held its ?UFC 103? event at the same venue and drew 17,428 fans for a gate of approximately 2.4 million dollars.

And finally, we head back to MMA Junkie for some very good news on the Showtime ratings of ?Overeem vs. Werdum?. According to their report, this event was the second most-watched event in the history of the Strikeforce/Showtime partnership. The event averaged 624,000 viewers and peaked at 719,000. While ?Silva vs. Fedor? still holds the crown as the most-watched Strikeforce event in Showtime history with 741,000 average viewers, ?Overeem vs. Werdum? now sits comfortably ahead of the former second most-watched show, ?Carano vs. Cyborg?, which averaged 576,000 viewers. And for all you Nick Diaz fans out there, Diaz-headlined cards still hold the fourth and fifth slots of the Top 5, with ?Diaz vs. Cyborg? at four and ?Diaz vs. Daley? at five.
I?m very glad that this event was such a big ratings success for Strikeforce. I admit that the main event wasn?t good and it has in fact divided a lot of fans, but I don?t think that should detract from what was an otherwise good event. We had some good finishes and some tough wars, and I?m glad that so many of Strikeforce?s 2011 shows have been setting ratings records.
I just wished their attendance figures were able to keep up. I thought they pulled a good number for ?Overeem vs. Werdum? until that report pointed out the huge disparity between the amount of fans Strikeforce drew and the amount of fans the UFC pulled in. This is a further reminder that the UFC holds all the cards and will dictate the future of the sport for the next five or even ten years, at the very least. I also have to once again wonder how long the UFC keeps Strikeforce alive as an active promotion before folding it into the UFC, as we all know they?re going to do, as we all know they?ve done in the past.
But, in the here and now, this show seemed like a good success for Strikeforce, and for that I?m thankful.
