Final First Impressions For "UFC Undisputed 3"

Over the past few days, I?ve covered the upcoming ?UFC Undisputed 3? video game in several different articles. I?ve spoken on what I feel needs to be put in, and also what I feel needs to be taken out. Now, it?s time for my final thoughts on ?Undisputed 3? as it stands now. There?s a lot of information that?s out there already, and this is my attempt to give my thoughts on just about all of them. Until we get more major announcements, these are my final first impressions of UFC Undisputed 3.

I?ve heard that the submission system has undergone an overhaul and that ?the shine? is now over and done with. I think this is a huge breath of fresh air and I can?t wait to see how submissions will now be implemented. Submissions should be a game of skill, of give and take, a battle where every inch matters and only the best can submit opponents with regularity. It should not be a mad dash to see who can spin their thumbstick the fastest. If the submission game finally gets as much nuance and involves as much strategy as the core striking game, then I?m going to be a very, very happy video game nerd.

The online mode already looks to be miles and miles ahead of previous UFC games. The two features that interest me most are the ability to take out ?flash KO?s?, and the ability to play with all fighters having equal stats. Both features have been said to be included in the game, and they can even be combined when you go online. What this means is that you will no longer lose a fight thanks to a fluke punch after spending several minutes owning your opponent. It also means you?ll finally be able to play as your favorite fighters without running into a tryhard (gamer lingo) that always picks the fighter with the best stats simply because his online win/loss ratio means everything to him. Those two simple features could drastically redefine the way I play UFC Undisputed 3 online? and that?s a very good thing.

Much like everyone else seems to be, I?m a big fan of ?PRIDE Mode?. A lot of cynics love to point out that this was only done due to ?EA Sports MMA? having Japanese rules, basically saying that the competition and only the competition is what literally forced THQ to put in a mode fans have been wanting for years.

To which I say: even if that?s true, the ends justify the means.

EA Sports MMA was by no means a perfect game, but I did enjoy the Japanese rules? although I always felt like soccer kicks and stomps and knees to the head were never implemented all that well. You could only throw them from a sparse handful of positions, and most of the time they?d get blocked. Nevertheless, if THQ is able to pull off ?PRIDE Mode?, it?ll be the one mode I think I?ll be playing the most besides online.

And in case you were wondering, yes, I included ?Career Mode? when I made the previous statement. As much as I would love, absolutely love, for a fantastic career mode in UFC Undisputed 3? I?m a realist, and I just don?t think it?s going to happen. I?ll play career mode once, simply to see what?s changed. But if it?s just more menu navigation with even more menu navigation disguised as interviews and cutscenes? If it?s just more stat management with even more stat management disguised as mini-games? Then that one time will probably be the only time I play career mode.

In the end, I recently said the following to a friend in regards to my feelings on UFC Undisputed 3. In a nutshell, I said that 20% of me took the stance of ?unless there are major changes, THQ isn?t getting my money.? But, and I know this makes me look like a gigantic fanboy, the other 80% of me thought ?NEW UFC GAME! MUST HAVE! I WANT IT NOW.?

Based on what new details emerge from now until the game?s release, both of those percentages could increase or decrease drastically. But in the here and now, as much as I hate to admit this? I?ll probably be getting UFC Undisputed 3 simply because it?s UFC Undisputed 3. Don?t judge me, fans and friends. I?m weak.
