Following today?s ?UFC 131: Dos Santos vs. Carwin? pre-fight press conference, company president Dana White announced all future main events will be five-round fights ? regardless if a title belt is on the line or not.
The rule change begins after UFC 133 on August 6th. White said light heavyweight contenders Rashad Evans and Phil Davis had already signed and submitted their contracts for their featured contest long ago.
All agreements signed from today moving forward will have the five-round provision.
Under the UFC?s current rules, only championship bouts are allowed to go five rounds. All other fights take place within a three round window. Regardless, each stanza runs five minutes long.
With this option now available, fanatics won?t have to worry about potential blockbuster bouts lasting a max of just 15 minutes. It also makes catchweight scraps that much more appealing.
White added that featured freebie fights on Spike TV and Versus events would also be of the five-round variety.
Middleweight king Anderson Silva will defend his strap against Yushin Okami at UFC 134, Jon Jones is expected to put his light heavyweight crown on the line against Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson at UFC 135 and Nick Diaz challenges welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre for his belt at UFC 137.
The rumor mill has been mum on which matchup might headline UFC 136.
