Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to a special preview edition of ?TUF Talks?. For those of you who may not remember, ?TUF Talks? was the weekly rundown I gave on the then-current twelfth season of the popular UFC reality TV show ?The Ultimate Fighter?. I detailed all the important events of the show and even threw some commentary in. I?m happy to announce that ?TUF Talks? will be returning soon, as ?The Ultimate Fighter? Season 13 is about to get underway. For now, here?s a preview of what I?m looking forward to for TUF 13.
According to several different interviews, there won?t be a whole lot of interaction between Junior dos Santos and Brock Lesnar this season. I believe Lesnar himself said that he dealt with Santos for approximately forty minutes at the most. This is a far cry from venom-filled seasons that saw rivalries like Ken Shamrock vs. Tito Ortiz and Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson. But I have to wonder: is that really such a bad thing?
I know that the coach-on-coach drama can sometimes deliver some of the most entertaining moments of the season, but was there ever any real sort of rivalry between Brock Lesnar and Junior dos Santos? This may have something to do with the timing of the fight, with JDS originally expected to face Cain Velasquez. These two simply weren?t on each other?s radars, so a rivalry doesn?t seem likely to form. This may also have something to do with Lesnar?s self-professed penchant for ?going dark? and almost completely removing himself from of the public spotlight when he?s not fighting.
When you consider all of that, I?m actually glad that the coach-on-coach interaction was kept to a minimum, because I think any heated exchanges would have just felt forced. Better yet, this allows more time to focus on the heart and soul of this show: the cast of newcomers that want a shot in the UFC and will fight anyone to get it.
Speaking of fighting, it was revealed that the ?fight to get into the house? rule was abandoned this season. The news was revealed in a recently-released five-minute preview of TUF 13?s first episode. I have to say, I wish this rule was mandatory for every season. I think the ?fight to get into the house? rule is a great way to separate the cream of the crop and ensure that only the best fighters get into the TUF house.
I?m glad that this season focuses on Welterweight fighters, because 170 always has a lot of versatility, especially in the UFC. I?m looking forward to seeing submissions, knock outs, brawls, dominant wins, and epic three-round wars. Going by the official cast roster, everyone has pretty respectable records.
Overall, I?m really excited to see this season of ?The Ultimate Fighter?. I?ve gotten to a point where I?ll watch this show regardless, but still, I?ve been given plenty of reasons to sit down and tune in for the premiere episode. I can?t wait to see what kind of new drama unfolds, and I definitely want to see how both Junior dos Santos and Brock Lesnar adapt to being coaches. This could be a very exciting season of ?TUF?, and I?ll be happy to cover it week in and week out.
And that?s that, fans and friends! Look for ?TUF Talks? to make its official return shortly after TUF 13?s first episode, which is currently scheduled for tomorrow, March 30. And what about you? Anybody out there excited for the thirteenth season of TUF?
