UFC 129 Fight Card Preview: Vladimir Matyushenko vs Jason Brilz

Vladimir Matyushenko and Jason Brilz will meet at UFC 129 on Saturday, April 30 on a light heavyweight bout that will be part of the event's pay-per-view card.

Matyushenko, 40, has been involved in MMA for quite a while, making his debut in 1997 and since then running up a record of 25-5. Matyushenko, known as "The Janitor" is coming off a win over Alexandre Ferreira in his last fight.

Brilz, at 35 has been at the fight game since 2000, earning a record of 18-3-1.

This fight may not hold much interest to your average MMA fan, but it could prove to be an interesting battle as both of these fighters are getting near the end of their careers.

With that in mind, the loser of this fight may never again see their name linked to a UFC main card as younger fighters move up the ranks and claim the prime pay-per-view card spots.

The winner of this bout may not see a UFC title shot any time soon, but they may very well a fighter that the UFC can count on to test some of the rising stars as they move up to the ranks of the main card fighters.

Many fans and pundits will tell you that this fight is not an important one, but the two competitors involved would surely offer a differing opinion.

Was it me or was the fans quiet for 55k

Joe did say it was difficult to appreciate via tv, but yes, seemed a bit quiet at points.

Which is difficult to believe, knowing Canadians. Mustn't come across well on television.

UFC 129 presser audio: GSP says ignore the oddsmakers, give respect to Shields

Before their battle at UFC 129 next week, Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields have pretty much refused to engage in trash talk. That's because there's an immense amount of respect between the two fighters. GSP went one step further today saying the odds on the fight are ridiculous.

"This is foolish. This is like a trap for me. I'm not going to fall into that trap. The odds are ridiculous," St-Pierre said. "Sometimes I think people don't even know the sport. To know the sport, you have to be into it. Most of the people who make the odds they don't even know the sport very well."

GSP said Shields would beat everyone of his previous opponents and he knew before watching past fights, that the former Strikeforce middleweight champ was going to beat Robbie Lawler and Dan Henderson.

"People forget that a guy who has good submission holds is just as dangerous as a knockout punch. You can be winning the whole fight ... and at the last minute you commit a mistake and bang you have to tap," St-Pierre said (1:15 mark). "Jake Shields has a weapon that's more dangerous than a knockout punch."

St-Pierre knows the general lack of respect for Shields puts a lot of pressure on him to win.

"People who make the odds they don't even acknowledge the true skill set of Jake Shields. And that is something that really pisses me off," St-Pierre said. "I have the pressure of going through Jake Shields like a knife in the butter. They don't understand the danger. People keep asking me about 'what are you going to do next?' It's not what I'm going to do next. What is happening right now is the most dangerous test I ever face in my career."

Here's video GSP on the teleconference. He was having a meal at the time (3:20 mark):

St-Pierre is firing away at the wrong people when he talks about the oddsmakers. The folks who set the numbers are simply looking for two-way action. He needs to call out bettors, fans and "experts" of the sport who don't recognize Shields as a good play at plus-350.

UFC 129 weigh-in: Shields unfazed by pro-GSP crowd

If the weigh-in is an accurate gauge of how fired up Canada is for UFC 129, tomorrow night at the Rogers Centre is going to be ridiculous.

A crowd of well over 5,000 jammed the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, to watch the 24 fighters weigh-in. Only Ben Henderson had difficulty, missing the lightweight limit of 155 pounds.

Main event fighters Georges St. Pierre (169.5) and Jake Shields (169) were on the money and then cordial during quick conversations with UFC analyst Joe Rogan. Shields was greeted with loud booing as he walked out, on the scale and on the microphone.

"I'm bringing the belt home with me. People can boo all they want, but it's me and Georges in the cage," Shields said. "It's gonna be an all-out war, one I'm going to make you remember."

The amazing Randy Couture came in well under 205 pounds at light heavyweight. The 47-year-old was 203.5 pounds and even looked confident despite having martial arts legend Steven Seagal staring over his shoulder. Seagal, the action film star, accompanied Lyoto Machida to the stage.

In the buff, with a towel draped in front of him, Henderson tried two times to reach 156 pounds. Ontario officials then asked for the booming music to be turned down. The official working the scale said the music was making the instrument vibrate and move. Henderson stood on the scale one final time and hit 156.5 once again. He'll have an hour to lose that half-pound. He meets Canadian Mark Bocek on the pay-per-view portion of the card.

Akiyama-Belfort meet in Philly, middleweight division heating up again

After a short break, the UFC's middleweight division has a ton of good fights falling into place. Today, the UFC announced Yoshihiro Akiyama is back and he'll face Vitor Belfort. Belfort is badly in need of a big win after getting booted in the face and losing to Anderson Silva back in February at UFC 126.

Akiyama and Belfort will square off at UFC 133 in Philadelphia in early August. Akiyama (13-3, 1-2 UFC) last fought in October at UFC 120. "Sexyama" was submitted in the final minutes against Chris Leben. He's lost two straight, but he's also garnered Fight of the Night awards his last three times out.

Here's a look at the rest of the scheduled bouts for 185ers near the top of the UFC's middleweight division.

UFC 130: Brian Stann vs. Jorge Santiago

UFC 131: Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz

UFC 132: Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben

UFC 134: Anderson Silva vs. Yushin Okami

We're still waiting for the next shoe to drop on middleweight bad boys Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping. Sonnen has to sit down with the Nevada State Athletic Commission in mid-May. The UFC has been tight-lipped about the actual penalty it handed down to Bisping for his spitting incident at UFC 127. One would think, he'll be back in the Octagon no later than July or August. Alan Belcher recently announced that he's ready to return in September.

The division lost one its bigger names with Nate Marquardt dropping to 170, where he'll debut against Anthony Johnson as the main event at UFC on Versus 4 in Pittsburgh in late June.

Traditionally, middleweight has been one of the promotion's weaker divisions. That could change once Strikeforce fighters like Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Tim Kennedy, Jason Miller and Robbie Lawler start crossing over.

Update: That didn't take long. Miller has officially signed a deal with the UFC.

The ‘Pitbulls’ offer another awesome finish at Bellator 41

In a highlight that should bring a smile to some fans' faces, Patricio "Pitbull" Freire scored another devastating finish for the "Pitbull" Brothers. See, the UFC doesn't have every good fighter in the world under contract ... yet. The smaller of the two dynamos, took out a high level featherweight in Wilson Reis. "Pitbull" dominated most of the fight. Reis, a top level grappler and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had trouble getting Freire to the ground, and eventually wore down on the feet as "Pitbull" scored the finish at 3:29 of the final round.

Freire (16-1) advances to Bellator Season 4 featherweight final where he'll face Daniel Straus. That won't be an easy fight. Straus is a monster at 145 pounds and very good grappler. He dominated Kenny Foster, finishing with a third round guillotine choke in the other semifinal on Saturday. The win was particularly impressive for the massive Straus since the fight began with Arizona afternoon temperatures around 99 degrees.

Patricio's older brother Patricky, 25, reached the Bellator Season 4 lightweight final where he'll face Lloyd Woodard.

Joe Warren was successful in a non-title fight, but barely against Marcus Galvao. Warren, a bantamweight by trade, holds the Bellator featherweight title as well. By the looks of Straus and the Patricio "Pitbull," he'll be hard pressed to exit 2011 with that Bellator 145-pound strap. Warren and "Pitbull" met in the Season 3 final, where the American posted an amazing comeback victory after getting torn up in the first round. It looks like "Pitbull" has shored up any weakness that he had with his takedown defense.

The "Pitbulls" are on the verge of stardom. The MMA blogger for the Daily Mirror in the U.K. says they have a chance to be the next Nogueira brothers.

UFC 129 Video Interview: Royce Gracie Talks Possible Fight at UFC Rio

Royce Gracie was on site for the UFC Fan Expo prior to UFC 129 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Prior to the Expo, Gracie spoke with MMA Fighting and Ariel Helwani.

Gracie has expressed interest in fighting at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, but he has not yet been added to the fight card or been given an opponent. While at UFC 129, Gracie plans on speaking with Dana White to determine whether or not he will be given a fight.

"Well, UFC put me as an active fighter, so we'll see," Gracie said.

The 44-year-old Gracie has not fought in nearly four years, but he hopes to finish his career with one more fight in the organization that he helped build.

"I'm interested. I got one more," Gracie said.

Despite not competing in years, Gracie has continued to coach and train. As a result, Gracie believes his conditioning would not play a factor in his return.

"Last night, I ran five miles breathing through my nose," Gracie said. "Not a problem."

As for his prediction for the UFC 129 main event between Georges St-Pierre and Jake Shields, Gracie would not be surprised either way.

"That's why my family invented the show," Gracie said. "There's only one way to find out. It can go either way."

UFC 129 Main Event Breakdown: Georges St. Pierre vs. Jake Shields

Filed under:

TORONTO -- Every once in a while in the fight game, you get a perfectly timed intersection of careers that leads to the two best meeting at their best. We don't always know it at the time, however. It's impossible to know the apex of an athlete's career until he retires and everything can be judged objectively. But it would be hard to imagine that either UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre or challenger Jake Shields isn't at the top of their game right now.

Between the two, they are a combined 29-1 over their last 30 fights. Since the start of 2005, each has fought 15 times; Shields is unbeaten, St. Pierre lost just once, and later avenged the defeat by dominating Matt Serra in a rematch.

The UFC 129 main event fight clearly features two athletes at the top of their game, and the result could change the way history is viewed.

UFC 129 Fight Card: Jason Brilz: "I Can See Myself Fighting Those Top Guys"

After a controversial loss at the hands of Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in May 2010, Jason Brilz will be looking to once again have his hand raised inside the Octagon tonight at UFC 129.

A professional mixed martial artist since 2000, Brilz racked up 15 victories before being signed by the UFC in late 2008.

Inside the Octagon, Brilz has notched wins over Brad Morris, Tim Boetsch, and Eric Schafer, while dropping split-decision losses to both Eliot Marshall and, most recently, Nogueira at UFC 114.

Currently, Brilz is slated to take on Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko at UFC 129 in Toronto.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jason Brilz about his early days in wrestling, the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s late wrestling program, and his upcoming bout with Matyushenko.

What inspired you to get into wrestling in the beginning?

It was mainly my uncle. Growing up in North Dakota, you either play hockey or you wrestled and I could never stop on my skates, so I started wrestling [laughs].

Do you remember your first match?

Yeah. I think I was in second grade and I got cross-faced and cradled. I remember I cried the whole way home and I had a bloody nose and a fat-lip.

Where you passionate about it right away?

I didn’t like it initially, just because I got hurt. But I stuck with it and after that, I just enjoyed it immensely.

What do you think made you gravitate towards it?

My uncle used to wrestle, too. We’re pretty close—he’s only four years older than me, so he’s like a big brother. He was always wrestling.

Did he wrestle at a high level, too?

He wrestled up to high school. I believe he qualified for the state tournament and then went into the military.

What inspired you to try your hand at mixed martial arts?

I was missing competition, so after I was done competing at the college level, I was coaching and doing some tournaments and stuff and a buddy said, “Hey you should try this.”

What were your first impressions of MMA?

Ah, rowdy [laughs]. Pretty crazy. It was something that I wasn’t expecting; I didn’t realize that there was so much technique involved, initially.

I knew there was a lot of technique in wrestling, but there’s a lot of technique in Jiu-Jitsu and in boxing. It was almost overwhelming at first, but it was a lot of fun learning.

Were you expecting to go in there and, kind of, dominate with your wrestling skills?

No. I just enjoyed competing. When I wrestled, I wasn’t even varsity on our college team—I wrestled a couple varsity matches here and there and I placed in a couple tournaments—but there was always someone better than me on my team; I think we had two national champs at my weight and a three- or four-time All-American while I was there.

It was tough just to make the team. I never thought my wrestling was overwhelming by any means—I think it was my desire to compete and to win.

Do you think your wrestling has helped you a lot in your mixed martial arts career?

I know it has. It has. Just like, you know, how a boxer is going to say how his boxing background helped him in mixed martial arts. It definitely gives me a nice edge.

Is it a psychological-edge, too?

Yeah. You know, you push your body through a lot in wrestling—much more than in other sports; especially back in the day, with the weight-cutting. It was horrible how we used to have to cut-weight and you’d still have to wrestle.

The only way to make it was if you were mentally-strong, and if you weren’t mentally-strong, then you weren’t going to last long in wrestling.

What’s your mindset as a collegiate wrestler?

You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get it done. There are no shortcuts; you have to make weight and then you had to perform. You had to do what you had to do.

How much weight did you cut, back in the day?

I used to wrestle at 167 ... From the start of the season, I’d start at 210.

Do you think that took a toll on your body?

Yeah. It’s horrible. My first five years of competing, I fought at heavyweight in mixed martial arts, because I refused to cut any weight. I was only walking around at 215, so I could’ve easily cut down to 205 no-problem. But, you know, I was like, “I’m not cutting a single pound.”

Do you think that hurt you?

No; I think it helped me, actually. I enjoyed fighting those heavyweight guys. They were big and strong and I’d walk out there and these guys would be 40 pounds heavier than me and three or four inches taller and they’d hit like a truck. I would just go out there and compete.

In the beginning, was mixed martial arts something that you thought you could make a living off of?

No. I was making 50 or a 100 bucks for my first couple fights, you know? It was more of a supplemental income.

Why did you get into firefighting?

My brother-in-law is a firefighter and a couple of guys that I train with are firefighters, too.

Is that something that you always had an interest in?

Yeah, pretty much. You talk to any young kid and they say, “Oh, I want to be a firefighter or a police officer,” you know? That was always lingering in the back.

Initially, I wanted to get into medicine, but I realized that I couldn’t do a lot of things that I still enjoyed doing—like coaching, wrestling, and all of that stuff. I was in school and I thought, “Well, you know what? I’ll teach.”

I was in school for quite a while—while I was coaching—and I was getting my teaching credentials and I was like, “You know what? There’s no way that I can go from coaching college down to coaching high school.” I didn’t see how I could do that.

Why is that?

It’s the mindset of the high-school kids compared to the mindset of the college kids; it’s a completely different mindset. Sometimes you talk to the coaches and they say that they get about 80 kids out at first and then half of them leave and then you have to kick out another 20, so you end up with a good, solid 20-crew. I’m not going to do that, you know?

I have 30 kids at the college level that want to be there, that are going to listen to me, and have been recruited by a top coach already. I don’t want to deal with all of that drama stuff; I just want to go out there and coach these kids and make them better wrestlers and better students.

How long have you been coaching for?

Since 2000 or ’99—about 12 years.

Is that a rewarding job for you?

Yeah, I love it. We just won our third consecutive national title and that night they cancelled our program.

So, my coaching days are done at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, but we’re still looking for other places to go...They’re moving to Division I, so they’re dropping their football and wrestling programs to better align themselves with the league that they’re going to.

How do you feel about that?

I think it’s probably one of the dumbest moves ever [laughs]. Personally, I don’t know how you drop a national-championship program as an athletic director—especially a program that has won six national titles in the last eight years—we’re pretty much self-sufficient; our budget hasn’t changed since ’79 and we raise all of our own money.

For them to drop it is just ridiculous. I don’t think they thought it all the way through; I think it was a rash decision and it’s going to hurt the school in the long run. But, that’s just my thoughts.

Do you think your squad could compete at the Division I level?

Oh, yeah. Easily. We had two of our guys beat two of the guys that were in the national finals in Division I. Our guys could compete in Division I, but the thing is; you have to sit out for four years—there’s no post-season play, nationals, or conference titles for four years.

More or less, all of the sports are going to be club-sports for the next three years and then the coaches will start recruiting, everyone will redshirt for a year and then they’ll be able to compete at the Division I level.

Sure we could’ve, but not many guys would stick around and wrestle just for the fun of it; you have to have something at the end.

What’s the rational on the administration’s behalf?

Money. It’s always about money.

And you think they’re going to regret that?

Oh, definitely. You know, their mission statement at the University of Nebraska is to help promote the community by providing a university for the kids of Nebraska. They’re really pushing golf and soccer and hockey. There’s not one Nebraska high-school that offers hockey.

There’s, I think, 60 schools that offer soccer and 30 or 40 that offer golf. On the other hand, there are over 250 schools that offer football and wrestling. In reality, you’re cutting down your chances of having kids come to their school.

You’re going to have to bring in kids from out-of-state. It will be interesting to see how many Nebraska kids come to UNO to play soccer and to play golf. There’s not going to be that many.

If you want to play hockey in Nebraska, you’ve got to have some money and those kids go off and play in Minnesota or Michigan. It is what it is.

How did you learn of this news?

They called us the night of our national-meet. We were out celebrating and the athletic director called up the coach and said that they were dropping football and wrestling. It was about an hour after we won it, so it was pretty bad timing.

That is bad timing. What do you think motivated that?

They said that the newspaper was running an article the next day, so they said that they wanted to let us know so we wouldn’t be blindsided by the newspaper. I think it shows the character of our athletic director and of the administration.

Where do you plan on going next?

Our coach is taking most of our team down to St. Louis. I’ll probably go down there a couple times during the wrestling season to help out, but other than that, I’m not sure.

We’ve got a couple coaches that are putting together a Greco and a freestyle club, so I’ll probably help out there.

What does being in the UFC mean to you at this point?

It’s unbelievable. Especially on this card—people recognizing you—it’s very cool.

Is it at all overwhelming?

Sometimes. What was overwhelming was the first week after I took that fight with ‘Lil’ Nog’; I wasn’t prepared for all of the interviews and that type of stuff—there were a lot of long days, you know? I still have my life at home. My wife still works and I still work and I’ve got to find time to train, I’ve got the kids.

Do you feel that you won your match with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira bout?

It was based on the first-round. I thought I won the second and I thought he won the third, so it all depended on who won the third.

How did you score it?

I scored it as a draw. My whole thing was to go out and perform, and I think I did that.

Do you look at it as a victory?

Yeah. I definitely do. It got me another fight in the UFC, it got me on pay-per-view, and it got me a ‘Fight of the Night’. Some of those things are things that I’ve always wanted; not everyone gets to do those things. It was a win-win for me.

How much do you feel you’ve improved since entering the UFC?

A ton. Every single fight I’ve improved more and more. One of the things that I’ve enjoyed about being in the UFC is; it’s motivated me to get better every fight, because every fight, I’m fighting someone better and better.

How are you feeling going into your upcoming bout?

I feel great; I feel really good. I’m ready to go. I’ve put in a lot of work—a lot of hours.

What problems does Vladimir pose to you?

Just like any fight, he’s big and he’s strong, he’s well-versed, he’s a good wrestler—pretty much everything [laughs].

Do you think he has anything to offer you that you haven’t seen before?

I haven’t seen his wrestling in a fight. I’ve competed against very good wrestlers before, but never in a fight situation. That will be interesting—I’ve never fought anyone with his wrestling background.

What do you think his game-plan will be going into the fight?

I don’t know. I have no idea. I’ll let you know after the fight [laughs]. I try not to think about it too much; I’m going to try and go out there and dictate the pace and impose my will.

What would a win this weekend mean to you?

It would mean a lot. Any time you get a win is nice.

Assuming you win, where do you see yourself in the UFC’s light-heavyweight division?

You know, out there somewhere. It’s such a stacked division—the belt changes hands a couple times a year—so, on any given night, anyone can go out there and win.

Realistically, how far do you think you can go in this sport?

Realistically, I have no idea. That’s, sort of, why I’m still doing it, you know? I can see myself fighting those top guys and winning. It would be sort of silly to go out there and fight those guys if I didn’t think I could win.

Georges St. Pierre Works on Striking, Gymnastics to Prepare for Jake Shields

by Michael David Smith

With just a week and a half to go before UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre puts his title on the line against Jake Shields at UFC 129, the Official GSP YouTube channel is offering up some inside looks at St. Pierre's preparation.

Some of the videos, like the one above of St. Pierre working on his striking, are about what you'd expect from any MMA fighter. But a few of the videos show how unique GSP is when it comes to his strength and conditioning work.

UFC 129 Fight Card: Will Missing Weight Effect Henderson's Performance?

Turns out meeting the 155 lbs. weight limit didn’t go as “smoothly” for Ben Henderson as he thought it would. Wow, talk about a world-class play on words. I’m here all week, tip your witness, and do try the veal if you get a chance.

There was no sign of trouble as former WEC champ Ben “Smooth” Henderson ascended the stage at the Ricoh Coliseum for UFC 129’s official weigh-ins. Well, other than the fact that he completely stripped naked before even attempting to make weight, and stepped onto the scale with a resigned shrug.

Other then that, it was all aces. In fact, the partisan Toronto crowd, which had booed every other guy fighting a Canadian tomorrow night, actually gave him a pretty warm welcome. It was a reassuring sign that maybe, just maybe, the WEC champions had penetrated the MMA fan’s mass consciousness.

Or that Toronto fans are simply the most well educated and informed MMA fans of all time. Either or.

They certainly won’t be remembered as the most forgiving, however.

On Henderson’s first attempt to make weight, the result came back at 156.5. That’s a disappointment to be sure, but in my mind half a pound (commissions usually allow a one pound weight discrepancy) doesn’t even register on the Travis Lutter scale of weight-making mistakes.

Tell that to the Toronto faithful, who turned on “Bendo” so quickly that Benedict Arnold and LeBron James were shaking their heads in disbelief.

Then the Ontario commission, in what surely wasn’t their finest moment, asked the UFC production to kindly turn down the music for a second. Seems the thumping nu-metal was throwing off their carefully tuned weighing devices.

I’m serious. Playing “Face the Pain” too loud will apparently cause Ontario scales to go haywire. We always were a Neil Young kind of province anyways.

A second trip to the scale was no better for Henderson, who was told he had an hour to shave off that last half a pound. Judging by the crowd reaction, you would have thought Dana had just stripped GSP of his title and given it to Ben. Even Joe Rogan implored the crowd to “give the guy a break.” It was a surreal moment for a crowd that should be all polite-Torontonians.

This seemingly inconsequential blip (Henderson would make the weight limit an hour later, as stipulated) has huge implications for tomorrow night’s card. I’ve long maintained that Mark Bocek is the livest underdog on the whole of the 129 card. In my mind, his odds just got even better.

Walking around the backstage area after the weigh-ins, I saw Henderson jogging in a full track suit, trying to sweat off that last pound while his trainer barked encouragement. “We’ve come too far Ben! We’ve worked too hard! This is just another sacrifice, Ben!”

In a way, it was inspiring. Ben did make that weight, after all. But man, I wouldn’t judge his facial expression and demeanor as “pumped”. Truth is, he looked gaunt and worn out, like anyone struggling to make weight likely would.

This isn’t to discount Henderson in any way. In fact, no one at 155 lbs. should sleep on him no matter what the circumstances are. But if his cardio isn’t there come fight night because of a rough cut, then Mark Bocek’s chances just shot through the roof.

Randy Couture reiterates even with a win at UFC 129, he’s doing it his way and retiring

Randy Couture would make Frank Sinatra, and just about every other former fighter proud. The 47-year-old MMA legend wants to go out "his way" and not on terms set by anyone else. Tuesday during the UFC 129 prefight teleconference, he repeated his claim that he's done, following his fight versus Lyoto Machida.

"It's been an ongoing transition for me," Couture told the media. "I kind of want to go out on my own terms and decide when enough is enough. I think that time has come."

Couture said fighting a top contender like Machida at a mega-event in front of 55,000 fans in Toronto is a great way to end things. It'll also be his 30th pro fight in MMA.

"I think it's time to focus on the other things going on in my life after this fight," Couture said. "And I've pushed it pretty far. I don't think anybody is going to push it as far as I have the last 14 years."

Even if he wanted to change his mind, Couture's schedule sounds like it's booked through the fall of 2011. He begins filming a new movie "Hijacked" in late May and then it's back with Sylvester Stallone for the "Expendables II" in September.

Couture has no plans of filing some sort of official retirement papers, but indicated he won't be talked back into the cage after this one.

"I'm sure that they're probably gonna have ideas for other fights. They're gonna try and entice me into coming back and fighting again. And I anticipate all those decisions. I see myself hopefully being with Zuffa and getting involved with them in some other way, shape or form."

Couture said he's healthy now and doesn't want doctors telling him he can't fight any longer.

He sounds interested in becoming part of the UFC's broadcast team down the road. With the number of events UFC/Strikeforce is going to be putting on around the world, that's a great idea. Couture's transition to the booth may not be the best news for some of the current announcers employed by Zuffa and Showtime.

UFC 129 Weigh in Results and Reaction

All 24 fighters participating in Saturday night's UFC 129 card took to the scales on Friday at the official weigh-in at Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The record-breaking event will be headlined by welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields.

Riding a 15-fight win streak over quality opposition, Shields hasn't lost in over six years, and he is easily one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world today. Still, many fans are unfamiliar with the Cesar Gracie student, and he'll enter the octagon on Saturday night as a significant underdog.

"It's going to be an amazing fight. I've been looking forward to it for years," Shields said in front of a pro-GSP crowd. "[Georges St-Pierre] is an amazing fighter. People can boo all they want, but I'm bringing the belt home with me. It's going to be an all out war, one you will never forget."

Meanwhile, St-Pierre, who is arguably the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, looks to secure his sixth consecutive title defense, which would put him one defense shy of tying UFC Hall-of-Famer Matt Hughes' record.

"It's going to go down with a victory. That's what I promise," St-Pierre told UFC commentator Joe Rogan. "Don't blink tomorrow."

The term pound-for-pound will be used often on Saturday night. UFC featherweight champion and pound-for-pound great Jose Aldo will make his octagon debut in a championship bout with Canadian striker Mark Hominick.

When it comes to otherworldly talent, Aldo's name is often mentioned alongside Georges St-Pierre and Anderson Silva. In the WEC, he laid waste to upper-echelon talent like Urijah Faber, Mike Brown, and Manny Gamburyan.

Hominick is quite possibly the best striker Aldo has ever faced, and he has the technique and patience to present some problems for the Brazilian.

The card also features a light heavyweight bout between UFC Hall-of-Famer and former two-division champion Randy Couture and former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Couture has gone on record in several interviews to state that this will be his final fight.

UFC 129 takes place on Saturday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event will air live on pay-per-view at a new start time of 9 p.m. ET(6 p.m. PT). Fans can watch two preliminary bouts on SpikeTV at 8 p.m. ET(5 p.m. PT).

The rest of the preliminary bouts will stream live on the UFC's Facebook page at 6 p.m. ET(3 p.m. PT).

What you need to know from this week on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’

Team dos Santos has the momentum from last week's win. Who will win the next fight? Will Brock Lesnar misuse more colloquialisms? Who paints his toenails? Read on for spoilers and a recap this week's episode.

Lollygagging of the week: After the loss, Lesnar is disappointed in the work ethic of his team, making me think that Lesnar learned his coaching style from:

You know what that makes you? Lollygaggers.

Fight announcement of the week: Team dos Santos has this week's pick, so he picks Ramsey Nijem to take on Lesnar's Charlie Rader, who Lesnar called out for lollygagging.

J. Crew model of the week: Nijem has painted toe nails and loves Glee, which give his teammates a reason to make fun of him."Everyone makes fun of me for watching Glee, but those kids are talented," Nijem says. No argument here.

Like a two-year-old, he takes his clothes off at the drop of a hat. He likes to joke around with his teammates, which may be a ruse to throw his opponents off. Perhaps, or perhaps not.

Cameo of the week: Brock Lesnar brings in UFC Hall-of-Famer Matt Hughes to work with his fighters on wrestling. Now, far be it from me to question Lesnar, but he is a former wrestler with pretty strong bona fides, and so he brought it another wrestler ... ? I love wrestling as much as anybody, but wouldn't it make sense to bring in a coach to shore up weaknesses? Nonetheless, Brock's team loves working with Hughes, a legendary welterweight.

As both teams talk about this fight, they're absolutely sure that the other team is underestimating the other. Both teams think that their fighter's advantage will be wrestling. Hmmm.

Misuse of the word disgrace of the week: Lesnar tells Rader that if he doesn't win, it's a disgrace because Nijem paints his toenails. I'd like to see Lesnar call Chuck Liddell a disgrace.

Fight of the week: Ramsey Nijem (Team dos Santos) vs. Charlie Rader (Team Lesnar)

Round One: Nijem starts by driving Rader into the fence in a clinch. They continue to pummel for much of the round until Nijem throws an inadvertent knee to Rader's crotch. Once broken apart, Nijem dives in for another takedown attempt. Though he has trouble getting it, he does inflict damage with knees and short strikes. He finally puts Rader on his back after tons of work. Rader springs back to his feet, but Nijem brings him back to the ground and stays in control for the rest of the round.

Round Two: This time, Nijem has no problem getting the takedown. He takes Rader's back and controls him at the beginning of the round, throwing short strikes until he can flatten Rader out and apply a rear-naked choke. Rader didn't put up much of a fight, and tapped to give Nijem the win.

After the fight, Lesnar said that he was worried from the start of the fight, when he saw the look in Nijem's eyes. He also says that Rader quit, an idea that Dana White backed up.

Quote of the week: "I don't even care. These guys don't want to even be here." -- Brock Lesnar

Lesnar clearly doesn't know how to handle fighters who don't have the same drive as he has. He rips them for choking and not caring. It's going to be a long season if Lesnar and his fighters don't get on the same page.

UFC 129 asks who is better, Canada or U.S.?

UFC 129 is more than a record-breaking MMA event that will pack 55,000 into the Rogers Centre in Toronto to see two championship belts decided. It's also a face-off between American and Canadian fighters to decide which country is better. Cagewriter breaks it down for you. Which North American country does it better?

GSP vs. Shields: Everything is going for GSP. He's fighting in front of a home crowd, he's at the height of his hype and he's considered invincible, which is exactly why I don't think he'll win. If Shields gets it to the ground, GSP is in trouble. Advantage: Shields and the U.S.

Signature food -- poutine vs. pizza: Poutine, french fries top with cheese curds and brown gravy, sounds amazing. However, pizza -- a food with an ancestor in Italy but that is singularly American -- is much better. It is customizable, yummy when hot and cold, can be made to look like Yoda and everyone loves it. Advantage: U.S.

Mark Bocek vs. Ben Henderson: BenHen needs to erase the memory of being on the wrong end of the Anthony Pettis highlight reel. That incentive is enough to get the former WEC champ the win. Advantage: Henderson and the U.S.

National anthems -- "O Canada" vs. "The Star-Spangled Banner": The U.S. national anthem, when sung well, can tear the house down, but it's not easy for an average person to sing. That's not true of "O Canada." During the Vancouver Olympics, Canadians showed how easy it was to sing their anthem. Advantage: Canada

National animal: For America, it's the bald eagle, a strong, proud bird that can pick off prey from a mile away. Canada's, which can seen on the header of the new Yahoo! Sports Blog, The Eh Game, is the beaver. Advantage: the U.S.

Nate Diaz vs. Rory McDonald: Does Canada have a Stockton equivalent? Nah The baddest fighters come from Cali, not Quebec. Advantage: U.S.

Other sports: Well, Canada did just win a figure skating world championship and the Canucks knocked my Blackhawks out of the playoffs, and they won the gold medal in both men's and women's hockey at the Vancouver Olympics. Canadians also excel at curling. Outside of that, America rules. Football, baseball, basketball -- I'll take Derrick Rose over Steve Nash -- we're better. We'll give you hockey, Canada. We'll take the rest. Advantage: U.S.

Other fights: On the other UFC 129 Canada vs. U.S. fights, my picks are Makdessi, Patrick, Jabouin for Canada and Ellenberger, Valencia, Jensen for the U.S.

The final tally: America wins, 8-4.

Super 7 Q & A: Jones explains how he’s not a “swagger-jacker” and says Evans fight will change the sport

During a Q & A with Joe Rogan and six fellow UFC champions, Jon Jones met the with the fans before the UFC 129 weigh-in. He detailed injury that forced him out of his fight against teammate Rashad Evans. He still wants that fight.

"It's definitely going to change the sport and you're gonna have teammates fighting each other left and right now. It's just business. Like if the Patriots had a teammate on the Jets. It's not like they can't play each other for the Super Bowl," Jones said. "You know you just have to get the job done."

Well, technically New England and New York can't meet in the Super Bowl, but we get his point.

Jones is still confused as to why Evans has been upset with him for the last few months saying Rashad gave him his blessing to fight Mauricio Rua at dinner the night before his fight against Ryan Bader.

"I guess the biggest thing that made him upset is that I didn't call him right away to let him know I had done the interview about fighting him," Jones said. "But what I said on the interview was something that I would've said to his face, but he didn't take it very well."

Evans has been talking trash on Twitter and during several Internet interviews since. He even cracked on Jones for a being a swagger-jacker. He explained to the Canadian fans and Rogan what that meant.

"[Before The Tonight Show appearance] I was sent to the same exact stylist and I ended wearing the same shirt, the same suit and the same tie [that] Rashad wore like a year earlier. I show up on Jay Leno, he sees the suit and he's like 'oh you're copying my style.' I have my own swag," joked Jones.

Jones said the hand injury has small tears between his thumb and forefinger. It's something that's happened once a year since his days in college. His management decided it was time to get it surgically repaired.

UFC adds its own online prefight and postfight show

The media isn't moving fast enough for the UFC, so the promotion has decided to move forward with its own prefight and postfight shows. The sport is badly in need of consistent shows before and after the fights. Various websites and even ESPN has dipped their toe into prefight/postfight field, now the UFC is introducing UFC Central at UFC 129.

According to MMAjunkie, the show will be hosted by former WEC voice Todd Harris along with CBS Sports' anchor Molly Qerim. UFC fighters Stephan Bonnar and Kenny Florian will serve as analysts.

The UFC adds that during the PPV event UFC Central gives extra access to the viewer:

Once the UFC 129 live broadcast begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, UFC Central will only be available to fans that purchased the event for viewing on UFC.TV and will capture interviews with fighters on the fight card during the live broadcast as well as other analyst commentary.

UFC Central will be offered as a seventh video feed and fifth audio feed, leveraging UFC.TV's multi-camera view and multi-audio feed experience. During the live event, fans will have the option inside of UFC.TV to select UFC Central as the main broadcast; or, drag and drop it into Picture-n-Picture or Quad View so that UFC Central can be watched and/or listened to alongside the broadcast of the main fight card.

Immediately following the live broadcast, UFC Central will be offered for free at UFC.TV with post-fight analysis, making it the ultimate destination for the most comprehensive UFC 129 news.

The show on UFC.tv airs at 8 p.m. ET. MMAConvert points out that it's an interesting time slot because it counterprograms the UFC 129 undercard fights on Spike TV at 8.

One would assume this is the beginning of plenty of programming on "UFC Central." UFC president Dana White has always been bullish on the Internet.

"It is (the future), I'm telling you," White told MMAjunkie.com. "I've been saying it for 10 years. Everything is going Internet. I believe that everybody is going to be watching TV and be on the Internet."

The promotion is showing the first five undercard fights on its Facebook page beginning at 6 p.m. ET.

You can watch UFC 129 on PPV (9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT) right here on Yahoo! Sports.

Picture of the day: Two champs in training

Strikeforce champs Marloes Coenen and Alistair Overeem got in a little practice.

Overeem is preparing for his June fight with Fabricio Werdum in June. This picture is exactly why I love MMA. Overeem doubles Coenen in weight. Women don't fight men, but they can still train together and get each other ready for their fights. That's not true of many other sports.

Video analysis: Jake Shields has to fight without Cesar Gracie at his side

Georges St-Pierre is on a Patriots-like run right now. To take down the 2007 Pats you had to out-think Bill Belichick and his coaching staff, it's pretty similar to the sort of game planning and execution needed against GSP. The UFC welterweight has won an amazing 30 straight rounds. That's sick. The man trying to derail this freight train is Jake Shields along with his mentor Cesar Gracie. One problem, Gracie isn't in Canada for the fight. His Brazilian visa doesn't allow him to cross the border to reach Toronto.

Yahoo! Sports' MMA expert Kevin Iole joined us to talk about the Pats versus Indianapolis of MMA. Without Gracie, can Team Shields take out GSP, backed by Greg Jackson, Firas Zahabi and John Danaher?

Shields' team questions GSP's heart.

"I think GSP is a phenomenal athlete. I think you gotta make it a war with him and I think you see what's inside of his soul," said Gracie.

UFC light heavyweight Phil Davis trained with Shields and came away impressed during this look on UFC Primetime (7:30 mark).
