Now that's a hematoma! Jimmo inflates Lewis' eye at MFC 28

Ryan Jimmo has carved out a reputation as a points fighter, but he did a nice job of forcing the doctor's hands at Maximum Fighting Championship 28 by busting up Dwayne Lewis. After peppering Lewis with kicks for 11 minutes, Jimmo got the fight to the ground where he pounded away as the former champion's face. The skin below Lewis' eye blew up like a balloon forcing a third round stoppage and handing the MFC's 205 title to Jimmo.

"Whenever he came wild, I just made sure I evaded," Jimmo told MMACanada.net (Video - 2:15 mark). "So what I did, instead of evading that time, I just planted and threw. I knew he just didn't think I was going to come with anything. I'm pretty sure I caught him with a right hand. Right after, we clinched up, he went down almost like jelly. I knew I rocked him. The takedown was almost way too effortless."

Since an early ouster on Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Jimmo has put together a solid run in Canada. The competition hasn't been the best, but the light heavyweight looks like a good prospect. With a karate background, he possesses awkward timing and had Lewis confused most of the fight. Now it's Mark Pavelich's job to bring in some bigger name challengers for Jimmo in 2011.

The best story of the night came from Drew Fickett. With all that Fickett has battled outside the ring and cage, it's hard to believe the MMA veteran is only 31 years old.

Fickett was a slated to face MFC lightweight champ Antonio McKee, but the one-and-done UFC fighter had to back out the fight last week because of a knee injury. Instead UFC-veteran Matt Veach filled in. Veach, who was 1-2 with the UFC and actually manhandled current UFC lightweight champ Frank Edgar at times during their December 2009 fight, looked like an amateur against Fickett.

Fickett's as slick as it gets in the submission game, so it was bizarre to see Veach choose to take it to the ground early and jumped into his opponent's guard. It took just a few seconds for Fickett (41-13) to throw his leg up, secure an arm and lock on an armbar for the finish. All that in just 36 seconds.

Fickett, who has fought a well-chronicled battle against alcholism, signed a long-term deal with MFC. Let's hope he keeps it together and we get to see him face McKee in the near future.

TUF 9 alum Richie Whitson (11-1) was also a winner, although the decision was a tight one against Curtis DeMarce. On TUF 9, Whitson lost to Ross Pearson, the eventual show victor.

Former UFC light heavyweight Rodney Wallace (10-4, 0-3 UFC) was taken out by Emanuel Newton via second round submission.

CW interview: Manhoef relishing the pressure for Strikeforce

In fighting Tim Kennedy at Strikeforce next weekend, Melvin Manhoef knows that in coming off of two losses, he has to win. At the same time, he sees value in having lost to Tatsuya Mizuno and Robbie Lawler in his last two bouts.

"I have a few losses. I have to win this fight. I'm going to do everything in my power to do that. It's sometimes good to have losses. You learn something from the losses," Manhoef told Cagewriter.

"I learned a lot about who my fans are. If you're at a point when you're winning, everyone tells you to keep going.  But when you lose, you have to keep going, too. If you don't have losses, you'll never have wins, either."

With just four weeks notice on the bout, Manhoef has spent time working on conditioning and hasn't had time to read what his opponent is saying about their fight.

"Honestly? I don't read anything. I don't see anything. I don't read the internet or anything. I'm not busy with that. I'm busy with training. But what did he say? You can tell me."

I responded that Kennedy said he will knock you out in the first round, and asked if he would like to respond to that.

"My response? What? (laughs.) Yeah, yeah, yeah. Everybody has fantastic dreams and everything. He can dream what he wants."

Though Manhoef has just fought once in the United States -- the loss to Lawler -- he can't wait to get back to America for this bout.

America: where dreams come true

"It's different than fighting in Japan or Holland. In America, I like it. The interviews and all the things around it. They put attention on the fighters and they really appreciate the fighters in America. They say in America that all dreams come true, so I hope my dreams will come true there. "

He's still somewhat of an unknown entity to American MMA fans, so they may not know of his K-1 kickboxing background, or how he is talented at bringing violence to the cage. They may even be surprised when they see him walk out to the cage wearing a dog collar. He says it's all part of the ritual to get him in fight mode.

"It's like a thing that's inside me. In my mind, when I see my opponent and we are in the Octagon, it's like the old days. Like the gladiators. I want to win. It takes over everything and I really want to hurt people at that moment. That is how the dog collar comes in," Manhoef said.

"When the dog collar goes off, I feel unleashed. I feel like I have to go. I have to do what I want to do, and I want to fight. It's like I'm a wild beast. I'm like an animal."

Brian Ebersole Chest Hair the Strangest Sight of UFC 127

by Michael David SmithBrian EbersoleBrian Ebersole made his UFC debut this weekend at UFC 127, and he did something we've never seen anyone do in the UFC before: He shaved his chest hair into an arrow, pointing up to his own face.

What would make a man shave his chest hair in this way? I have no idea. Ebersole is an odd bird, known for participating in some strange fights and pulling off some unusual moves during his 60-plus fights on the small-time MMA circuit, so maybe he just thought turning his chest hair into an arrow was one more way of distinguishing himself.

Paul Daley Misses Weight for Fifth Time in 11 Fights

by Michael David SmithPaul Daley missed weight on Friday for his welterweight fight on Saturday. And this is not a rerun.

Daley, the former UFC fighter who's expected to contend for the Strikeforce welterweight title this spring, has a bout scheduled on Saturday against DEEP welterweight champion Yuya Shirai in Manchester, England, with the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts welterweight title on the line. But Daley came in at 172 pounds, two pounds over the 170-pound welterweight limit, at Friday's weigh-in.

Given another chance, Daley came in at a final weight of 170.4, which is still over the limit for a welterweight title fight. As a result, the bout is now a non-title affair.

Daley's history of missing weight includes coming in at 171.75 at Shark Fights 14 in September of 2010, coming in at 172 for UFC 108 in January of 2010, coming in at 171.5 for MFC 20 in February of 2009 and coming in at 174 for MFC 19 in December of 2008. So this marks the fifth time Daley has missed weight in his last 11 fights.

White UFC 127 vlog: Recovering from broken eye, Koscheck is surfing!

Dana White's latest vlog takes the viewer from Hawaii to Sydney. White arrives in Australia and hits Bondi beach where UFC fighters and Octagon girls are surfing.

That's right Brittney Palmer and Arianny Celeste are soaking wet in bathing suits (3:00 mark).

The craziest scene is seeing Josh Koscheck emerging from the water (4:05 mark).

That's the same Koscheck, who suffered a broken orbital bone against Georges St. Pierre at UFC 124 in early December. Koscheck tells White the eye is doing fine but he still feels numbness on the right side of his face and teeth at times. He's surfing? That's nuts. Koscheck says he still has five months of recovery ahead.

On a side note, Tiki Ghosn also saved White's life ... twice (2:08 mark).

Watching MMA helps man disarm an alleged murderer on the subway

On Saturday morning, Joseph Lozito was simply taking the subway to work. Today, he finds himself labeled a hero after taking down a whack job, who seemed intent on adding to a 28-hour stabbing and murder spree.

Lovito said he used an MMA technique to take down a knife-wielding attacker on the No. 3 train. From ABC News:

With a leg swipe, Lozito helped knock down [Maksim] Gelman, a grafitti vandal with at least 10 prior arrests. Lozito said that watching mixed martial arts on television helped him fight Gelman.

"I guess you watch it for 20 years, you just pick up some things through osmosis," he said.

He knew something was wrong when he first jumped on the No. 3:

"When I boarded the train at Penn Station, a good amount of people boarded and I noticed there were two police officers boarding with me. You could hear on their walkie talkies that something was going on...they were there for a reason," Lozito said.

Subway riders had spotted Gelman jumping off one train and onto another early Saturday morning.

When he boarded Lozito's subway car, he pounded on the conductor's door, demanding to be let in.

"When I first saw this man approach the motorman's quarters, he just looked off, he just looked like there was something about him. When he started knocking on the window, telling the police to let him in, it set up a red flag," he said.

Lozito said Gelman, 23, then turned his attention to him.

"Basically, he was about two or three feet away from me. He took out a giant knife and just looked at me and said, 'You're going to die, you're going to die,' and then he lunged at me," Lozito said.

Lozito lunged forward and took Gelman to the floor. From the New York Times:

Once on the ground, Mr. Lozito grabbed his attacker around the waist, and the officers from the motorman’s cab rushed to help. They handcuffed and arrested Mr. Gelman, who was awaiting arraignment Sunday night.

Mr. Lozito suffered four knife wounds to the head and a gash above his left eye. The tribal tattoo on his left triceps was slashed, and a wound on the back of his head required 20 stitches and 18 staples.

"It could have been a lot worse," he said. "I’m glad I wasn’t No. 5 — I’m glad he didn’t kill anyone else."

New York City police were on the lookout for Gelman:

...who killed his mother’s boyfriend, Alexander Kuznetsov; an unrequited love interest, Yelena Bulchenko; and Ms. Bulchenko's mother, Anna Bulchenko.

Gelman also ran over and killed a 62-year-old pedestrian with a car he stole from Kuznetsov. He crashed that Lexus into a Pontiac Bonneville, stabbed that driver and stole the Bonneville. Four hours later, Gelman emerged in Crown Heights and stabbed a livery cab driver.

Zhang Tie Quan Becomes First Chinese Fighter to Win in the UFC

by Michael David SmithZhang Tie Quan taps out Jason Reinhardt at UFC 127.In a sign of the continuing worldwide growth of mixed martial arts, the UFC is in Australia this weekend, and China's Zhang Tie Quan earned a victory in a fight broadcast internationally on Facebook.

Zhang became the first Chinese fighter ever to fight in the UFC, and he became the first Chinese fighter ever to win in the UFC when he choked out Jason Reinhardt in the first round of their UFC 127 bout.

The fight was short and sweet, with Zhang quickly locking in a guillotine choke and putting Reinhardt to sleep. Reinhardt, a 41-year-old who hadn't fought in three years, was no challenge for Zhang at all.

Bisping with future title shot and new TUF slot on the line?

Some may look at Jorge Rivera as an easy mark, but for Michael Bisping, the veteran fighter is a spoiler who could ruin some big things in the future.

Following a bad knockout loss against Dan Henderson at UFC 100, Bisping tumbled down the middleweight rankings. No one was pushing for the Brit to get a shot against Anderson Silva. If he takes out Rivera, he's back in the mix for a title eliminator according to Betfair’s Alex Bake:

"There’s certainly no love lost between these two and it promises to be one hell of a battle. The punters are getting behind Bisping for this one," Bake told the U.K. Telegraph. "He has it all to fight for; a decent showing here and he could line up a potential title eliminator against Yushin Okami."

Betfair lists Bisping as a minus-300 favorite, with the Brit drawing 2-1 for a knockout. The Venetian in Las Vegas has Bisping a little higher at minus-320.

The Telegraph's Gareth Davies says Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt and Demian Maia are all possible future opponents for Bisping.

There could also be a television slot on the line for Bisping. Davies says the UFC is on the verge of rolling out its first "satellite" season of "The Ultimate Fighter."

[...] pitching England v Australia in a series which may be called ‘The Sm-Ashes’. Weights to be contested, and the coaches for the series are yet to be decided. Bisping has both won The Ultimate Fighter and was a coach on the U.K. vs. USA version of the televised show. He would seem perfectly placed for such a role.

Bisping revealed earlier this week that he's strongly considering a permanent move to Australia. Following UFC 127, he and his wife are staying in the area to check out houses and schools.

UFC 127 prelims on ION and Facebook

It looks like fans win out again at UFC 127 with more "free" fights. The promotion is throwing a total of four fights on the combination of Facebook and Ion.

Visit the UFC's Facebook page hit "like" at 8 p.m. ET to watch Jason Reinhardt battle Tiequan Zhang plus Tom Blackledge against Aussie Anthony Perosh.

At 9 p.m. ET, ION will air Alexander Gustaffson against James Te Huna, Ross Pearson trying to bounce back against Spencer Fisher and Riki Fukuda's UFC debut versus "the Ultimate Fighter 11 alum Nick Ring.

According to MMAjunkie, the first ION telecast of UFC 125 delivered pretty well with 829,000 viewers. That's half of Spike's normal numbers but the ION deal wasn't announced until a few days before the event and certainly doesn't have the coverage that Spike has and isn't well known to most television viewers.

The photos are from today's UFC 127 workout at Star City Casino.

Former 'Crocodile Hunter' bodyguard, Noke rolls over Camozzi at UFC 127

During the many chapters of his life, Kyle Noke has seen it all. He's looking to make the MMA chapter his most interesting. A former bodyguard for Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin, Noke has stormed to a 3-0 mark in the UFC after an easy win tonight over Chris Camozzi in the pay-per-view opener at UFC 127.

A native of New South Wales, Australia, Noke served as one of Irwin's bodyguards for three years and also worked with his Aussie brother on his martial arts skills. Irwin, who passed away in 2006, was a huge MMA fan.

"Strong, very strong," Noke told MMAjunkie.com of Irwin's ability. "He had that strength from wrestling crocs all his life from pulling them in and holding them tight. We'd never let him get on top because he would just hold you down as tight as he could."

Irwin did more than employ Noke, he backed his fighting efforts.

"He's one of the reasons why I'm here where I am now. He sponsored me and paid for my first flights to the States. He really pushed me to follow my career and follow my passion," Noke told the Sydney Morning Herald. "He used to help us prepare for fights. He had such an eye for detail through what he had been doing for so many years. You only have to watch the guy on TV to know how much passion the guy has got. If I could channel that passion in fighting for wildlife then that's a great start."

Irwin was an MMA devotee and according to Noke, the reality star even entertained fighting and donating the proceeds to charity.

Noke looked inspired from the opening seconds. Camozzi charged him for a single-leg takedown attempt, but the Aussie thwarted the effort with some underhooks. He showed his power by pushing forward, scoring a takedown and falling into the mount position. Camozzi did a solid job of avoiding big shots for a few seconds, but allowed Noke to crawl up his body.

Noke (19-4-1, 3-0 UFC) appeared to be setting up an armbar or inverted triangle when Camozzi tried to escape out the backdoor. Noke was quick to react by taking Camozzi's back. The Aussie flattened out Camozzi and tapped him with a rear-naked choke at 1:35 of the first.

Camozzi was a familiar opponent for Noke. They were castmates on Season 11 of "The Ultimate Fighter." Noke lost via unanimous decision to Kris McCray during the TUF 11 quarterfinals, but heappeared to be one of the better prospect on the show. Fighting out of Jackson's MMA in Albuquerque, Noke, 30, is just moving into his prime. He has a well-rounded game and a chance to do some damage in the UFC.

Jon Fitch, B.J. Penn Fight to a Draw at UFC 127

BJ Penn fought Jon Fitch to a draw at UFC 127.In a battle of two of the best fighters in mixed martial arts, the judges couldn't pick a winner: Jon Fitch and B.J. Penn fought to a majority draw at UFC 127.

One judge scored it 29-28 for Fitch, but the other two judges scored it 28-28, and those two judges made it a majority draw -- a disappointing ending that left the fans in Sydney, Australia booing. It was the second time in three UFC pay-per-views this year that the main event has been scored a draw.

Fitch seemed to control most of the fight, and Penn acknowledged afterward that he thought he had lost. But Penn requested a rematch afterward, and that seems likely.

Kharitonov KOs Arlovski, moves to Strikeforce Grand Prix semis

Sergei Kharitonov earned the first semifinal berth in the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix, knocking out Andrei Arlovski at 2:49 in the first round of their bout in New Jersey on Saturday.

Arlovski, a crowd favorite, started strong with a flurry of strikes and kicks. He had good movement early, avoiding Kharitonov's strikes. But it turned bad for Arlovski when Kharitonov used the clinch to work inside, then landed a knee, an uppercut and knocked him to the the ground with a short right jab. Kharitonov finished the bout with a strike on the ground, knocking Arlovski out cold.

This is Arlovski's fourth loss in a row, with three of them first-round knockouts. He was once the UFC heavyweight champion, but now is in a precarious point in his career with a record of 15-9.

Kharitonov, who made his name in the Pride Fighting Championships, laughed off the suggestion that he is a darkhorse in this tournament.

"I don't care what the experts say. I'm going to win this tournament."

He will now face the winner of Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers. Those two will face off in April.

WEC Vet Ian McCall Upsets Top Flyweight Jussier da Silva

by Michael David SmithThe flyweight division in mixed martial arts is easily overlooked, with none of the major American promotions putting 125-pounders in the cage. But the flyweights usually put on a show when they get the opportunity, and that was certainly the case on Friday night, when World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Ian McCall upset Jussier da Silva, the Brazilian who was generally recognized as the best flyweight in MMA heading into the fight.

McCall, who was cut by the WEC after losing to bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in 2009, put on an impressive performance to beat da Silva by unanimous decision on Friday night's Tachi Palace Fights card. McCall would now have to be considered one of the elite flyweights in the sport, and maybe the best flyweight in the world.

Re-writing history: The ridiculous bashing of Fedor

All fighters get old. The game catches up with them and moves along. Combine those absolutes with the fact that we live in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately era and you get what Fedor Emelianenko has had to hear the last few days after his loss to Antonio Silva.

A guy goes without a loss for 10 years and now he was never really that good? Essentially a fraud?

We addressed the topic on ESPN1100 in Las Vegas, discussing the premise that most athletes from previous eras were never really that good because they wouldn't be able to compete with the modern-day athlete. Should they all be disrespected?

If that's the case, let's eliminate all pre-1980 NFL offensive linemen from the NFL Hall of Fame. After all, those 250 pounders would get destroyed today in an era of 300-pound behemoths. Frankly, 6-foot-6 power NBA Hall of Fame power forward Dave DeBusschere sucked and Joe Louis wasn't really a great heavyweight boxer. The guy fought most of his career between 195-205 pounds.

Ridiculous, right?

Not according to guys like Jim Rome, who teed up Fedor and smashed him out the park on Rome is Burning:

"Now it’s pretty obvious why he didn’t want to sign with the UFC. While Strikeforce does have competitive heavyweights, he didn’t want to fight the best of the best on the biggest stage, he knew better. He refused to take any chances; he milked it for all its worth and he got paid and then exposed and now it’s over."

Which company has a better heavyweight division is certainly up for debate. As far as "not taking chances and milking it," Rome is off base. Fedor wasn't afraid to face the UFC heavyweights and anyone who follows the story knows it's never been the fighter who's making the decision. If critics want to kill M-1, that's fine. But the fighter himself faced all comers and was a dominant forced from 2001-2006. Just like Chuck Liddell, Wanderlei Silva and Matt Hughes, the other dominant fighters of the time deserve respect, so does Fedor.

Lesnar picks Fitch; White can already see his nightmare on the horizon

It's all coming together perfectly. Georges St. Pierre could be leaving the welterweight division soon and the man to beat will be Jon Fitch. Fitch is a great fighter, but seems to drive UFC management, led by the president Dana White, nuts because he usually wins by decision. When it was time for Junior dos Santos and Brock Lesnar, on the set of Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter," to pick UFC 127's main event they had trouble deviating from the usual Fitch script.

Both fighters picked Fitch to take out B.J. Penn via decision. That's not surprising since Fitch has won five straight decisions and his last eight have gone the distance. What was surprising was Lesnar actually throwing down some Fitch knowledge. when he made his selection, he seemed to be aware of Fitch's game.

Each time Lesnar has been asked in the past to pick a fight, it's clear he really doesn't own a computer or watch much television. He fights, but doesn't watch the stuff.

Penn is the smaller fighter at 170 pounds and may have trouble keeping Fitch off him. White's nightmare would be another three-round lay and pray with Fitch rolling to a win and into position to fight for an interim welterweight belt.

White's first vlog for UFC 127 (NSFW) also includes the immediate aftermath of Anderson Silva's amazing kick that finished Vitor Belfort at UFC 126. UFC matchmaker Joe Silva calls the champ some sort of mother[expletive] and White kept saying "I've never even seen that before."
