Joe Stevenson welcomes Danny Castillo into the UFC in March

Joe Stevenson may be on his last leg in the UFC.
The former title challenger is now 2-4 over his last six fights, recently having been knocked out by fellow “The Ultimate Fighter” veteran Mac Danzig in devastating fashion last December at UFC 124 in Montreal, Canada.
Now, instead of preempting for a fight that could [...]

Once a 'Joe' facing Justin Gatlin and Kevin Greene, Charlie Brenneman now a 'pro'

Charlie "The Spaniard" Brenneman hasn't broken into the mainstream just yet when it comes to his mixed martial arts career. The lightweight will try to improve on that image tomorrow night on the Fight for the Troops 2 card on Spike.

In an odd twist, he's actually had more success on Spike television than anyone else on this deep Ultimate Fight Night 23 card.

Brenneman was once a competitor on Spike's "Pros vs. Joes" back in 2006.

The former college wrestler competed against the likes of Darren Daulton, Herschel Walker, Kevin Greene, Dominique Wilkens and Olympic sprinter Justin Gatlin. Episode 9 of Season 1 was titled, "Could you outrun the fastest man alive?"

"He probably beat me by 100 meters in the 200-meter dash," Brenneman told the Canadian Press.

Brenneman bounced back in the football competition against Greene. That was good enough to help him win the episode. He went onto the finale with his brother Ben and won the Season 1 title. He won $20,000 and a Dodge Caliber. It turns out the car was more valuable than the cash.

With Brenneman relocating two years ago from his Pennsylvania home in Hollidaysburg to a spot in East Hanover, N.J., the car came in handy for driving all over northern New Jersey. He trains in Whippany with fellow UFC fighters, Jim and Dan Miller. He also works with Ricardo Almeida to south in Hamilton and occasionally trains at Renzo Gracie's gym in New York City. Throw in the commute back to East Stroudsburg, Pa. where he helps coach the East Stroudsburg University wrestling team and that's a lot of driving.

Brenneman is 1-1 in the UFC. He debuted with a win over Jason High and lost via second round TKO against Johny Hendricks at UFC 117. Tomorrow at UFN 23, he gets to show his progress against a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in Amilcar Alves, who fightsout of Jose Aldo's camp.

If you're wondering about the nickname. Brenneman did his undergrad work at Lock Haven and got his masters from East Stroudsburg. He went on to teach high school Spanish from 2004-2007.

Face-off! The best staredown techniques in MMA

Two randomly, great staredowns took place at the weigh-ins for the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2. Fighters use several different techniques to gain an edge during weigh-ins.

The La-La-La I can't see you technique: Anderson Silva (above left) used this before his bout with Chael Sonnen in response to the many unsavory things that Sonnen said about Silva before the bout. It worked for Silva, as he won in the final minutes of the title match with Sonnen. Cheick Kongo tried it against Frank Mir, but it didn't work as well.

The sharing-is-caring method: At FFTT 2 weigh-ins, Yves Edwards was hungry. After all, he had just cut down to 155 pounds. He snacked on some potato chips, and was kind enough to share a chip with his opponent, Cody McKenzie. That streak of kindness helped Edwards, who won with a rear-naked choke. This technique was also employed at UFC 94 by Akihiro Gono, who shared his extra-large wig with Jon Fitch, but it didn't turn out so well for Gono. He lost in a decision.

The finger-in-the-face gambit: Ah, Nick Diaz. Don't ever stop being you. At a press conference before his bout with Frank Shamrock, Diaz gave the Stockton Heybuddy to his opponent. Though Shamrock laughed it off, Diaz did win in a second-round TKO.

The Two-Thumbs-Up: Damarques Johnson and Mike Guymon's face-off resembled something from this site, but also notched a zero on the intimidation scale. Perhaps that was part of Johnson's plan, as he won with a body triangle at Fight for the Troops 2.

The Glory Days: At UFC 123, old friends Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson paid tribute to their roots by facing off as they did when wrestling in college. Simpson told Cagewriter that they had planned on wearing their college singlets, but Munoz couldn't find his. Munoz won the decision, but this technique wasn't really about intimidation.

Bears fans thank Bas Rutten for his calm, cool head

Football fans know that on Sunday, the Bears will play the Packers for a shot at the Super Bowl. It's kind of a big deal here in Chicago (you can read all my Bears-related blogging here, and all of Yahoo! Sports' awesome NFL coverage here), but the Bears might not have reached the NFC Championship game without Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher. It turns out that Brian Urlacher might not be where he is without the kindness of MMA legend Bas Rutten.

So on behalf of all Bears fans, thank you, Bas, and thank you to the bouncers who stepped in and prevented Urlacher from getting the liver shot that Bas would have definitely delivered.

Thanks to Chicago's MMA.

Coker Keeps Talking Diaz-Mayhem, But Still May Not Fully Grasp his Role as Strikeforce CEO

("Diaz vs. Miller? I'd love to, but I think I'm busy that weekend." PicProps: MMA Convert)

Even after last week’s revelation that it would take “a couple fucking million dollars” to get Nick Diaz to meet Jason “Mayhem” Miller at a catchweight, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says he’s still interested in making that fight … just not so interested that he’d actually take an active role in trying to book it. According to a story out on MMA Weekly this weekend, Coker says he didn’t even call Diaz manager Cesar Gracie during the recent period of negotiation when the fight almost happened, then didn’t.

“Sometimes I’ll call Cesar, but on that occasion I didn’t call Cesar and I let my guys handle it, and it was really close,” Coker said. “I thought it was going to happen, but at the last minute it fell apart. I know weight was definitely one of the issues. The weight they say, ‘Oh it’s only two pounds, three pounds,’ but you know what? When you’re two or three percent body fat, five percent body fat, there’s just not a lot to lose and we just couldn’t bridge the gap. In the future, I’d still like to put that fight together because I think they have some unfinished business with that match-up.”

What fighters go through for your entertainment

At the beginning of each UFC pay-per-view, the UFC plays an opening video that likens the UFC to gladiators, like this one from UFC 124:

But how much do today's fighters have to do with the gladiators of ancient Rome? Quite a bit, it turns out. Like Maximus, they put their bodies through hell so that you'll be entertained, but they don't give much thought to the future. In a column from MMA Fighting, Strikeforce fighter Jason "Mayhem" Miller recognizes the risks, but says it doesn't change anything.

"Athletes know this stuff. We do," said Miller. "We're not dumb. It's like that new research that links head injuries and Lou Gehrig's disease. Well, duh, science. Thanks for telling us what athletes already know. We know what we're doing to ourselves. It's the elephant in the room. We're giving our bodies for the entertainment of the masses. I'm okay with that. I've had plenty of surgeries. I know there's a chance that I could be retarded. I know that."

MMA is far from the only sport where athletes take these risks. Football players take on massive amounts of punishment, as do boxers and hockey players. But it's worth reading the entire article to hear how fighters we know and love have paid the price.

Aldo's next! Hominick destroys Roop to lock in his title shot

Jose Aldo finally has an opponent. Mark Hominick was offered the chance to take on the UFC's featherweight champ if he could win tonight at Fight for the Troops 2. Josh Grispi had the same opportunity at UFC 125, but blew it with a loss to Dustin Poirier. Hominick learned the lesson and delivered big time by smoking George Roop in less than two minutes. The Canadian scored a TKO finish at 1:28 of the first round to make his title shot official.

"If you're next in line for a title shot you got go out there and prove it," Hominick told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I believe my standup is far superior to everybody in the featherweight division, but you have to show it. You have to prove it in the cage."

Whether he's the best striker up for debate, but there is no argument that he is incredibly composed on the feet. The much taller Roop tried to stay on the move and catch Hominick off guard by throwing kicks, punches and knees from odd angles.

Hominick calmly stalked Roop and picked his spot. After Roop threw a lazy jab, Hominick floored him with a straight just 36 seconds into the fight. Instead of jumping into Roop's guard, Hominick backed up and waved for the fallen fighter to get up.

Roop never seemed right the rest of the fight. He also fell into a bad habit by constantly moving to his left. With 3:54 remaining, Hominick nailed Roop with a left hook and eight seconds later he stunned him with a straight right. Roops was out of it and got caught with another big left hook. Down he went and with Roop's hands at his sides, Hominick nailed him one more time. Referee Don Turnage jumped in to stop the fight. Roop protested, but when he rose to his feet he stumbled across the Octagon.

Hominick's been rumored to face Aldo at UFC 129 in Toronto.

"Jose’s next. I think he’s the best pound for pound, but he’s never faced anyone like me," Hominick said. "I'm going to go out there and prove it."

The UFC is set to debut in Ontario in April. Hominicks' hometown is 100 miles to the south of Toronto.

Barry responds to Browne's nasty Fight for the Troops Twitter rant

Somewhere along the line, Pat Barry rubbed Travis Browne the wrong way. Browne had some pent up anger he wanted to vent and chose an odd time to do so. After Barry made an impassioned speech following his victory at Fort Hood over Joey Beltran, Browne unloaded on the former kickboxer suggesting his speech was a bit phony.

Browne was attacked by several followers and tried to clarify his comments, but it's clear he'd like a fight down the road with the loquacious Barry.

Shortly after the fight, Barry had no idea why he was under attack.

"He wants to know why am I now talking about my Dad's dog tags versus any other fight? It's because my Dad was in the Army and I'm on an Army base. Kind of makes sense. Seems like an opportune time to actually bring it up," Barry told Hector Castro from MMADieHards

Barry was totally confused.

"I don't why he's mad at me. I didn't do anything wrong to him. I don't even think we've ever met. Travis Browne says a lot of ugly things," said Barry.

He also told Browne to worry about his next fight against Stefan Struve. Browne and Struve square off at UFC 130 in May. Barry closed the interview by saying he would fight Browne if offered the chance.

Walker lives the simple life at San Jose hotel: Training and little else

Herschel Walker is worth millions. He's a big car collector. The former star college and NFL running back has 63. At 48, he's accomplished a helluva lot, yet he's turned back the clock and living a simple existence in a San Jose hotel for the last six weeks.

"This is my little thing. I do my work. Everyday I stay in this hotel room. It ain't about going out," Walker told Shootmedia.tv. "I don't go out to nightclubs. I don't go out and party. I never have."

Walker said the trainers at American Kickboxing Academy, where he's worked on his MMA skils for the last few years, have done too much for him to screw around.

"I have a resonsibility to those people who have given me a hand. I have a responsibility to AKA for giving me a chance, an opportunity."

Walker faces 40-year-old Scott Carson this weekend in San Jose for Strikeforce.

For the kiddies, check out the old highlights of Herschel steamrolling people during his Georgia days on his way to the 1982 Heisman. Walker also says he's still doing a minimum of 750 pushups and 2000 sit ups a day.

It?s been a long and painful road downhill for former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia. Since 2008, when high-profile losses to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko caused Sylvia to vanish from the high-level MMA landscape, ?The Maine-iac? has slowly been working his way back up to a point of relevancy. Many still consider Sylvia [...]

Troops at Ft. Hood enjoy fights and Octagon Girls

The stands at Fight for the Troops 2 are filled with well-deserving service men and women from Fort Hood. A group of them got to meet Allison Diehl, the winner of the UFC's contest to vote in the best Hooters Girl for Octagon Girl duties.

The UFC makes more than just an amazing night for the troops. In addition to bringing the fights to Fort Hood, they are raising money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund with an auction and donation drive. If you donate at least $50, the UFC will send you a free gift.

Herschel Walker Wins Strikeforce MMA Bout by First-Round TKO

by Michael David SmithFormer football star Herschel Walker improved to 2-0 as a professional mixed martial arts fighter, beating Scott Carson on Saturday night's Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg fight card.

Walker won a one-sided beatdown against an opponent who didn't have much to offer. The question now is whether Walker is interested enough in MMA to stick with it and take a chance against an opponent who might actually hit back, which Carson didn't do.

"I was OK," Walker said when asked to assess his own performance. "I've got to be on offense. Being a young MMA fighter I've got to control what I'm doing in the cage."

Nick Diaz Submits Evangelista Cyborg Santos in a Strikeforce Brawl

by Michael David SmithStrikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz got a tougher challenge than expected from Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos Saturday night in San Jose, but after brawling for nearly 10 minutes, Diaz submitted Cyborg with a textbook arm bar with just seconds remaining in the second round.

Diaz improved his record to 24-7, and he's now on a nine-fight winning streak. Diaz isn't the best welterweight in the world (that honor belongs to Georges St. Pierre), but he's unquestionably the best welterweight outside the UFC.

"I respect the way he fights," Diaz said of Cyborg. "He don't play around. He came out here and fought me."

MMA Marketplace: Bid to win the Octagon canvas

A few weeks ago, we told you how you could bid on various UFC items, like dinner with the Octagon Girls or a VIP fight weekend, to benefit the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund as a part of the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2. You can still bid on those items, or on the new items the UFC has just added to sweeten the pot.

Now, you can bid on the canvas from "Fight for the Troops 2." This strikes me as a really cool piece of memorabilia that I'd have no clue what to do with. Do I cover my wall with it? Do I have it made into a couture dress? Would the blood and sweat stains from Melvin Guillard, Evan Dunham, Matt Mitrione and the rest make an interesting table covering?

Click here to bid on the canvas, dinner with the girls, a training session with Randy Couture and Forrest Griffin, or any of the other items up for auction.

Offering to bring two fights a year to N.Y., UFC gets strong support

The economy sucks everywhere. Governmental budgets are being slashed as everyone looks to tighten their belts. New York is no different. The Empire State is looking for new revenue streams, yet its still holding on to the silly view that mixed martial arts is beyond regulation and licensing.

Dean Murray, a N.Y. State Assemblyman, was one of several high ranking officials to attend yesterday's UFC Madison Square Garden press conference/MMA rally.

"The fact of the matter is, this another example of New York being a nanny state. We have to stop doing that. We have to give the choice," Murray during the presser (12:12 mark). "How many TV stations do you have? How many radio stations do you have? You have choices. By us not legalizing this, it's removing that option of all these, literally millions of fans in New York state, having a chance to see their hometown heroes fighting."

Dana White spoke about the impact of bringing two or three UFC events each year to New York.

"The financial study [that HR&A did] is incredibly conservative. In that study we priced tickets cheaper than New Jersey, and we bring a lot of money into that state. We also conservatively projected only two events -- one big PPV at Madison Square Garden, and one upstate, which would be a fight night or a finale or something like that." White told ESPN.com. "But who knows -- maybe we come into New York and we do three events, and you triple whatever that number is. It's absolutely insane and asinine for this not to be sanctioned."

The UFC president pointed out that he's not just fighting for his promotion to land in New York.

"When we're talking about the UFC coming to the state of New York, a lot of other mixed martial arts events will too. Which will create even more revenue. You're going to have all these other organizations that will come here and bring more money in and create more jobs," said White.

Scott O'Neil, the President of Madison Square Garden Sports, said he's a big fan of  MMA and gave a glowing report (2:45 mark) after watching UFC 111 in nearby Newark, N.J.

Jamie Springer of HR&A Advisors estimated that MMA would bring a $23 million impact to New York. The estimates were based on two UFC events each year in New York that would generate $16 million. An additional $7 million would come from 70 more MMA events each year in N.Y. Springer based that estimate on the number of fight cards in states like New Jersey, California and Pennsylvania.

Experienced Prangley wary of another jiu-jitsu ace from the Gracie clan

Trevor Prangley is not a young man, so at this point in his fight career he's looking for challenges. It doesn't matter if it comes at light heavyweight or his more natural weight class, middleweight. That's why he didn't hesitate in taking a fight against former heavyweight Roger Gracie at 205.

Prangley, 38, will meet Gracie on Saturday at Strikeforce in San Jose (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET/PT).

The South African downplayed a huge edge in MMA. He has 30 pro MMA fights to Gracie's three. Prangley told Strikeforce.com:

"I think it will play a little bit of a part. But the guy has been on the world stage in jiu-jitsu so many times that I don’t think it will be as big of an advantage as people might think. He’s competed at a high level in jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling all over the world, and it’s the same concept, really. But Roger’s never really been hit, and I’m going to put it on him."

Prangley isn't the most technical boxer, but he's a hard puncher. His striking wore down Keith Jardine at Shark Fights 13.

Prangley, a former Division I wrestler, knows he probably needs to keep the fight standing. His submission defense is solid, but Gracie, a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, is off the charts. Prangley:

"A guy like him is so good, that I can train basic stuff, but if he gets me in a bad position, its going to be a matter of fighting hard and never stopping my movement. There are no secrets that I’m going to pick up in the last few weeks before that fight that’s going to help me avoid getting submitted I just intend to not give him the opportunity to get a submission. That’s what I’m focusing on. Not the submission defense itself, but stopping him from getting into position to get an opportunity to submit me."

Prangley is banking on the fact that he's catching Gracie early in his career before he turns into a complete fighter. He also knows time is short and without a win here, future fights with the big promotions are going to be harder to come by.

"I’m going to win this fight, and I have to win it because it’s a 'do or die' situation for me. Roger’s really early in his career, so a loss for him won’t be that devastating, but for me it’s devastating. And so I’m not going to allow it to happen. So the fans can expect a win from me."

In Poll of Favorite Sports, MMA Is Overlooked

by Michael David SmithThe polling firm Harris Interactive regularly surveys Americans to find out their favorite sports, and the results of this year's poll are in. Check out the results and you'll see about what you'd expect: Pro football is clearly America's most popular sport, baseball is next, then college football, auto racing, basketball and hockey.

What you won't see anywhere is mixed martial arts.

The reason? MMA wasn't even one of the choices Harris Interactive gave to poll respondents.
